READING THE LATIN and MEDICAL KNOWLEDGE BACK IN THE DAY : HUNGARIAN CEMETERIES , READING DEATH RECORDS, GENEALOGY RESEARCH IN HUNGARY #3

  What did our ancestors know about the cause of death back in the 19th century and before that?  When there were no vaccines, when a C-section was only done to try and save the baby since the mother had already died in childbirth, and when average people rarely lived as long as we are expected to? It seems that the more populated the place, and the more likely an educated doctor, the more details or understanding there might have been.

I've been working with death records for some time and many have no connotations at all, rather the concern seems to be that last rites of the Catholic church were administered to the dying, and that a grave was provided. When we look at records we may see Latin being used, though sometimes other notes are in Hungarian. 

Latin was the universal language of the Roman Catholic church.

SOME CAUSES OF DEATH IN RECORDS FROM 19th and 18th century  Death = Halal 

Naturalis : a natural death.  In other words not an accident.  Can cover anything other than an accident but especially old age or being debilitated. Also Ordinaris - an ordinary death, nothing unexpected.  (So far I have found only one record, for a twelve year old boy, in which is was written tragikus baleset (in Hungarian, Tragic Accident.)

Note that handwritten F's may be used in some cases instead of S.

Tusis : (Tufis) cough  (Whatever ailed this person they were coughing a lot.  Can be a childhood illness or can be TB.)

Phthisis : pulmonary - TB or another progressive and systemic illness

Hydrops (Hidrop) : fluid in the tissues or edema (visible, this can indicate any end-stage of life including cancer.)

How much was understood about cancer is unknown to me. We now know there are very many cancers and generally the place they originated in the body is what they are called, i.e. "colon cancer" though it may have spread.

Aquio suffo - Aquio suffocatus : means suffocate with water (drowned) however, some illness the person's lungs or heart filled with fluid.

Dipenteria / Dipenterium : Prison  (Person died while in prison.)

Morbo grasante : morbid fat or fattening disease

Dolorum : Pain  Which might be followed by where the pain was such as Stomachi (Stomach), Internum (Internal), Guter (gut)... Our ancestors did not have much for pain control and death was often painful... Fajdalom = Hungarian 

Ulceribus : an ulcer or wound that would not heal, which could be due to an infection. Fekely =Hungarian  (A Note that this notation might also indicate the person had diabetes.)

Tumores : tumors.  These would probably have had to be visible or perhaps operated upon.

Febris : fever  laz=Hungarian

Senex : Old Person (senile?)

Plagues  (Wash your hands!)  Pestis = Hungarian 

Epidemia - Epidemic

Any illness that was the cause of many people to die was called plague, so Covid-19 would be considered a Plague.  Though we understand what caused some of these today, such as unsanitary conditions, bad water, fleas, some forms of plague are still not understood.

Typhus - (According to the CDC of the United States) Typhus fevers are a group of diseases caused by bacteria that are spread to humans by fleas, lice, and chiggers. Typhus fevers include murine typhus, epidemic typhus, and scrub typhus.  Fleas spread murine typhus, body lice spread epidemic typhus, and chiggars spread scrub typhus.

Cholera - (According to the CDC of the United States) Cholera is a bacterial disease spread through contaminated water and food. Cholera can cause severe diarrhea, dehydration, and even death if the disease goes untreated.  People living in places with unsafe drinking water, poor sanitation, and inadequate hygiene are at highest risk of cholera.  (kolera = Hungarian)

Provisus - provisions made for burial.  Often the name of the priest who performed Last Rites is given.

The Diocese has taken stringent measures to protect the saint's remains, including requiring a total of 10 keys to access her coffin.

Three of the keys are held by the Duke of Alba, another three are possessed by the city of Alba de Tormes and the Discalced Carmelite Father General in Rome has an additional three.

The 10th key - known as the King's key - is also needed to access St Teresa's remains, with three needed to open the outer gate, three to open the tomb and four to open the coffin.

ALL SOULS DAY and ALL SAINTS - HUNGARY NATIONAL HOLIDAY SINCE 2000

"According to folklore, the dead visit them during such times, so it is customary in many places to lay the table for them as well, put bread, salt, and water on the table.  The Hungarians of Bukovina also bake and cook for the dead and take the food to the cemetery and distribute it.  They light as many candles at home as many dead the family has.  In the villages along the river Ipoly, those who cannot go to the cemetery light candles at home on All Saints Day.  They used to observe whose candle burnt out first, because it was believed that they would be the first to die in the family.

Just a note that I have always thought that the term All Souls Day and the term All Saints Day indicated the same holiday but I was wrong, All Souls is for the ancestors but All Saints is for the saints we know about and the saints we do not know about.  In Catholicism it is understood that many a saintly person lived in obscurity.  However, prayer to help those who have not yet gone to heaven to be with God can be said especially on these days, or truly any time.  These souls are able to be released to heaven, and are not suffering eternally for the evil deeds they did when alive.

RECIPE FOR ALL SAINTS CAKE Mindszenti Kalacska - SOUL CAKES

CATHOLIC CULTURE LITURGICAL RECIPES   This cake has lemon or orange rind intended for a little flavor, yeast, lots of eggs.  However this citrus cannot be a traditional cake because citrus was not traditionally available in Hungary.  I know from other research that the source of vitamin C in Hungary was peppers and cabbage. An orange or lemon was imported was a special but unusual treat for a long time.

Small round cakes with a cross on top - be that by cutting or decorating a cross icon - are called SOUL CAKES and other European cultures also had a tradition of giving out these cakes.  An English tradition had children praying for souls and being given these cakes as a kind of treat.

There are also pagan traditions that suggest that food is offered for Hungry (not Hungarian) Ghosts.

ST EMERIC FEAST DAY

If you have a Hungarian ancestor named Americus,

 he may actually have been named after Saint Emeric, 

rather than the United States of America.

His father was Saint Stephen,

 and he was to follow him onto the throne of Hungary,

 but he was killed while hunting wild boar.  

The boar got him and he was about thirty years old at the time.

Another version of the name Emeric is Henry.

HUNGARICANA URBARIUM 1767 : USE GOOGLE SEARCH AND TRANSLATE TO LEARN HUNGARIAN RELIGIOUS HISTORY - THE TURKS :TIP #13

Besides using the Hungaricana (a site belonging to the National Archives of Hungary) to search for the information on the Urbarium 1767, the census ordered by Queen Marie Theresa at a time when Hungary was part of the Austrian Empire, you'll want to search the site for information held in it's archives and special collections about the time, place, and people of a region. This other. often incredibly important information, can be read in English, using the Google Search engine and the opportunity to translate.  To clarify, the translator will not work on the archived images of the Urbarium, but it will work to translate excerpts from books.

On the Urbarium, as previously mentioned, you will encounter places that seem to be wholly owned by a church or religious entities, an "Ecclesiastica" entity, or where there are monasteries, nunneries, bible colleges, priest education centers, pilgrimage sites, and so on.  

Using the search HUNGARICANA URBARIUM GONC, for instance (Gonc being the town previously mentioned, the name translating to "Hustle Bustle," perfect for a town that was integral in the marketing and shipping as part of the agricultural and vineyards economy as well as the coopering of the "Gonc wine barrel) I not only pull up information about the town but this:

This book is about a time and place in which the Hungarians and the Churches, particularly the Roman Catholic Church, had suffered the devastation of the occupying Turks. TWO THIRDS of the HUNGARIAN POPULATION WAS SLAUGHTERED BY THE MUSLIM TURKS.  Because of this devastation, people were invited in to settle and populate the country from other countries and ultimately this provided in country ethnic diversity. This is when Germans in particular started coming into the country by sailing down the Danube or traveling in the equivalent of the Wagon Trains we're familiar with in America. (And to this day the Constitution of Hungary states this is a Christian country which ties in with current attitudes about immigrants.) 

The book selected to link to as an example of the NATIONAL ARCHIVES of HUNGARY archives is from the 18th century but it has information collected in the 1500's!  It's about the properties by county and place owned by the church. It mentions places destroyed during the Turk's invasion and occupation. Gonc itself is only mentioned once. 

But there's a lists of properties including that which HERMITS had taken over from them in the mid 1500's.

So many CONVENTS, MONASTERIES, SEMINARIES, and ESTATES OWNED BY DIOCESE and HOLY ORDERS are evident on the 1767 URBARIUM -  HUNGARIAN LANDHOLDER CENSUS. 

The Jesuits, the Paulines, the Benedictines...

Let me start with some Hungarian words translated so you'll be aware of what you're reading. I'm going to list these as a progression so you can see how the word meanings go. Sorry I don't have the keyboard to put in the pronunciation marks.

TELEK - property (Usually means equipment such as farm equipment rather than a house or estate.)

CSALAD - family home or stead. (On census csalad may imply a residence that is owned rather than rented or is considered the family stead.)

SZELLER - cottar (implies rented building such as a tradesman's workshop or store. Note that I recently learned that cottar indicates a house on a small plot of land only big enough for a family's own vegetable and herb garden. Consider profession of person who lives there as may tradespeople lived and worked in the same dwelling.)

HELY - place (geographic such as on map)

OHAZA - old country - home country
HAZA - house or home - HAZY - "house of" as in Eszterhazy "house of Eszter"
EGYHAZ - church
EGYHAZI - old church
EGYHAZATYA - church father
EGYHAZATYAK - church fathers
FOLD - land
EGYHAZI FOLDEK - church lands
EGYHAZI ANYAKONYV - church register (births, marriages, deaths)

TEMPLOM - church but best to think of this word used to say a spiritual worship place of any religion including Jewish or Muslim.

TEMETKEZESI - burial place or grave

KAPOLNA - chapel (sometimes indicates place for Baptism)
KAPTALAN - charter house (indicates place to pay taxes or make payments.)

APATSAG - abbey
KONVENT - convent

BENCES - Benedictine
BENCESREND - Benedictine Holy Order  (Also called "Black Monks")
BENCESAPACA - Benedictine Nun

PAP - Priest

APACA - Nun

PALOS PAPOK - Pauline Priests (plural)

... So I want to write a bit about GOTHIC FICTION which I took a class on in college..  GOTHIC FICTION began with the REFORMATION.  Novels featuring lusty and bloodthirsty sinning monastics, priests, and nuns were popular. These fictional characters had sex, got pregnant, murdered people, were sadistic or mean.

You could say that these novels were media and they were a lot like FAKE NEWS today, in the case of GOTHIC FICTION intended to promote Protestantism. We know about them because so many were printed (the printing press having been invented and used primarily for printing Bibles) that some of these novels still exist in archives!  Were they based on true stories?  It's always possible some were but we don't really know for sure. Today GOTHIC FICTION is written by authors such as Anne Rice, who wrote pornography featuring castles and nobles and virgins and horses under a different name... but who is better known for her VAMPIRE novels, such as "Interview With A Vampire," which was made into a film. (In her book "Interview With A Vampire"  her characters search the world for others like them and stop in Central Europe where they are surprised to learn that People Actually Believe They Exist.) To be literary about her work, Rice is writing about Power being played out, about people who when told to jump say, "How high?" Rice has been known to have a personal struggle with Catholicism.

Women in the the mid-late18th century, when the Urbarium of 176,7 took place were present in religious contexts. We see that there are many places in the counties where there are parishes, churches, temples, retreat houses - and islands!, monasteries, schools, and convents. Most women had two choices, to be a wife and mother or dedicate her life to God or Jesus in a Holy Order. But convents were more like old YMCA with its inexpensive rooms for women who wanted to get way and go somewhere to grieve their widowhood, preserve their virginity until a marriage contract could be discussed, or hide away to heal a heart break and preserve or renew their reputation. 

Some convents were boarding schools, and some took in orphaned girls. (When the fashion designer CoCo Channel was a girl in France and their mother died, her father took her and her sister to a convent and then deserted them there.) So you see, there was much to learn besides prayers and needlepoint at the convent. Wealthy and noble women were often taught to read and do the math they would need to run large estates at the convent while their husbands went visiting their fellows or off to politics or battles. And on the Urbarium 1767 you will see quite a few women who were countesses or baronesses who were widowed.

We can assume these women were running the estates they inherited, at least temporarily, until a son came of age, the estate was lost in debt, or they remarried. 

YOU WILL ALSO SEE A FEW UNMARRIED DAUGHTERS OF COUNTS WHO HAD LAND OF THEIR OWN.  A WOMAN WITH LAND WAS A WOMAN WITH A DOWRY, a desirable marital partner.

100th ANNIVERSARY of THE HOLY VISIONS at FATIMA - Another Miracle Revealed?

Since the 100th anniversary of the Miracle at Fatima - Portugal is upon us, there's been a lot of news about this event.  There wasn't just one sighting, there were a series of meetings back in 1917.  The World War I era.

Of course it's said that 70,000 people assembled to see the Miracle of the sun dancing in the sky.  (I do wonder about the size of the crowd simply because sometimes these estimates grow through the years.) Many people have since thought that maybe this was a UFO, specifically an alien spaceship and that the Blessed Mother apparition was either a hologram, the actual Blessed Mother (perhaps in her energy rather than corporeal body), or an alien acting as a Blessed Mother.  These science oriented skeptics of course think there is some conspiracy with the Catholic Church. With a massive world wide number of Catholics, what a great way to get the message across that Russia would need to go back to being prayerful and Catholic?

What does it take to become a Catholic Saint?  Martyrdom for the Faith, a life of amazingly impactful works, or - the clincher - miracles of healing attributed to you.  Two of the Fatima children, who died not long after the apparitions, which was one of the things the Blessed Mother told the children, have been canonized by Pope Francis.

Every day there seems to be another announcement of the discovery of another planet or moon of a planet that has the chemistry that we think is necessary for some form of life - even if it be tiny microbes.  So to me it is entirely possible that we are not alone in the universe.  And if there are beings like us, then the Creator must have created them too.  But are they Good Guys or Bad Guys?  Do they want to help us earthlings advance scientifically or spiritually?  If they're visiting our planet, I sure hope so!

AKATIUS CSALAD 

Csalad means that it is the family house of heritage, parents, the stead.  If you find this, you may just have located where a particular family considers their origins to be, no matter how much other property you find they own elsewhere!  *** This might just help you go forward rather than backwards with your genealogy search.  A cross check might be running the surname and county through FAMILYSEARCH, the free LDS database.  Check the church records and other census to see what you can find about the family in that town or village or country house. Remember though that the same surname does not always mean the same family or branch of the family.

It's possible also that this CSALAD  once was the place of origin of the family, but even in the 18th century people moved around a lot, more than we can imagine.

For nobility, it was more common for the bride to go to the groom's mother's house after the marriage was arranged, sometimes as young as 10 years old, younger if the child's parents died, so that the bride to be and the groom to be could grow up a bit together. These arranged marriages sometimes required traveling for weeks with an entourage and across the country. For nobility, my research over many years has shown that marriages occurred younger since it wasn't necessary for the groom to prove himself as a trade apprentice first. (In the 1800's I've found a number of brides age 16 who are nobility or marrying nobility.)

Marie Theresa and the Hapsburgs were CATHOLIC and they wanted CATHOLOCISM to be the religion of the country they ruled, but many of the nobility and royalty had become Protestant and didn't comply with another religious switch. You might think this census focuses on who is Catholic, but it does not.  Houses of worship as well as schools for priests are contained in it.

(Remember that Buda and Pest are not united as one city at this time. Buda is in the hills and Pest is in the flats.)

This means the ABBEY of Telki
EXAMPLE:
OROKKE - this word means perpetuity.  Other similar words are OROKBE - for keeps, OROK - timeless, and OROKIFJU - ageless.  If you see this word on the census it means that it is understood that the person or institution will always own the property!  (Of course this is an assumption that doesn't always play out in history.)

You will find colleges or schools for priests and ministers as well as SOME churches listed, but I've read a few towns that I know had a church from way back without seeing the church listed... possibly there is only a chapel there of the church was built later than this date.

*** Additional notes May 2017... Another way of looking at the CSALAD family home distinction, in a list of Cottars and Renters of buildings, is that the census taker may be stating that this particular dwelling is owned not rented.  Additionally, you may find in many counties families with the same surname who rent and own .  Remember that a szeller/ building could be a barn, a workshop, even a bar. I've learned that Cottar implies that the person owns or rents a house on a small plot of land, generally only big enough for the family to have their own vegetable and herb garden.

IS A WISH FOR PEACE JUST RIDICULOUS? THEN CALL ME THAT! THE STATE OF THE STATE OF CALIFORNIA

The recent Presidential election left many Americans, including me, embarrassed and exhausted.  The winner, Donald Trump, might just make America Great Again, one of many campaign promises he made, but he seems to be a mercurial person. 


Many people I've spoken with have told me that they expect campaigns to get nasty.  It was just so nasty, it left me wishing and hoping that we can all hit the restart button, and begin again, in brotherhood and peace, with not politicians but with leadership. 


AM I JUST RIDICULOUS?  Maybe so, but if there is any time of the year in the Christian world where we can have such hopes, I think that's the Christmas time.   It's become the most materialistic time of the year.  It should be the most idealistic.


It's coming up on us fast, and so is the swearing in of Donald Trump as the President of the United States. People I meet are not idealistic about his - regime.  They are afraid they will go without health insurance or housing and be out on the street.  It's enough to make me think MAYBE CALIFORNIA SHOULD BECOME ITS OWN COUNTRY... WE'RE ALREADY BIGGER THAN SOME!  THE MENTALITY HERE IS JUST - DIFFERENT.  Some people are suggesting we leave the Union - for four years or the end of Trumps regime, whatever comes first.


No, that's not likely to happen.


In particular to my state, California, there is a lot of fears about illegal immigration, that there will be "sweeps," and people will be taken away, like the Nazis taking away the Jews in the Holocaust.


One of my friends is a librarian for the city, of Mexican origin, her great grandfather walked into Arizona, worked full time there, and founded a family that has done well for itself.  On the library desk I found print outs that had been left there by immigration advocates, in both English and Spanish, intended for illegal residents to hand to any police officer that might start asking them questions, stating that they are going to stay silent.  I took one for my wallet, even though I'm legal, as a reminder that I don't necessarily have to answer the questions asked by an officer, though I don't think I'm headed for trouble with the law.  I told her that I did not think there would be sweeps.  Our mayor and police said they would not cooperate if ordered to.  However, if someone commits a violent crime or is dealing drugs, especially if that person has broken Federal law, then I would not be surprised if they were deported.


What is so difficult about becoming a citizen?  If you come legal, it's not!  I have a neighbor from Hungary getting his citizenship.  Another neighbor who got his a decade ago came as a refugee from Kosovo.  There is a Moslem family, peaceable, who are refugees from Pakistan, also in process.   Another neighbor, has just gotten dual citizenship - Great Britain and the U.S.  Yes, there was time involved, and money, and tests, but it worked out.  None of them ever felt their stay here was threatened because they were doing the right thing from the start.


I believe that if you do the right thing from the start, you will be honored.


Recent killing rampages by people of Moslem origin especially, have basically sanctified what Trump is talking about, and that is, that we have let in all sorts of people who do not deserve to be here.


Do we really need more immigrants?  We welcome the educated, but Blue Collar American Trump advocates want their jobs back here and now.  Here is the hitch.  Illegal immigrants are not protected by labor laws and can be hired for cash and less than minimum wage and they are not likely to complain about the worst conditions.  Some of them are afraid that becoming legal will mean no longer getting work.  They also break the Unions, simply because they are willing to be underpaid.  It's not hard to find them.  I suspect that every construction site has some.  Some dirty people take terrible advantage of them including dumping them off after a days hard labor without the promised pay, and the threat to call the INS on them.


It's kind of like the situation for background actors for film.  Everyone who does it wants to get into SAG, the union, because the pay and benefits are then decent, but everyone says that once they got into SAG, their bookings diminished, so they worked less, and made about the same money.


California decided that a person didn't need to be legal to have an ID or a drivers license, which means they have to be insured for accidents, they can have library cards, they can have medical care at County hospitals, and they can have education.  Why?  Because California decided that these benefits benefit everyone, not just the illegal person. 


Much is made of Mexican gangs.  They exist.  They shoot  and kill each other and innocent people.  However, there are gangs of Armenians and Russians, and other ethnic groups as well, and sometimes it seems like identity theft and more sophisticated frauds are committed by these more educated criminals 


So, will a wall actually keep people out - or in?  If you read around it, you'll learn that the wall has been an ongoing project in the Obama administration, and that it isn't always a physical wall. 


Our illegal immigrants are not all criminals and our criminals are not all Mexican.

AUGUST 20 is SAINT STEPHEN'S DAY IN HUNGARY

AUGUST 20th is SAINT STEPHEN'S DAY IN HUNGARY. There are state celebrations such as firework displays as Saint Stephen is credited with FOUNDING HUNGARY and making it a Christian nation in 1000 AD. It is his crown that it used as an icon for Hungary and the real crown still exists. But that's not all that exists. When Stephen was canonized as a saint on August 20 1083, it was found that he his hand was still "fresh" and so it was removed and is mummified and on display (It looks kind of gray!)

COLUMBUS DAY AFTERTHOUGHTS and THE REFUGEES INCOMING TO HUNGARY and ALL OF EUROPE

Yesterday was a holiday called COLUMBUS Day here in the United States.  It meant that most government offices and schools were closed in honor of the DISCOVERER OF AMERICA.  (I should say THE Americas as he didn't actually land on North America or what would become the United States.)  COLUMBUS DAY IS A TRADITION.

To be honest, a lot of people are just grateful to have a day off, maybe just to go shopping for all the sales that feature early winter clothing.  No one wants that holiday removed from the calendar if it could mean loosing that day off.  (We really do not have much off time here in the States.)  I went out shopping for several hours, something I loath to do, but my neighbor enticed me with a big coupon she had for more savings from the local Macy's.  I barely thought about the discoverer of America or any of the issues now connected to him as I walked the mall and tried on lots of shirts.

As a child the adventures of Columbus, his sailors, and the ships the Nina, the Pinta, and the Santa Maria, certainly captured our imaginations in school.  How could they have sailed all the way across the ocean in those small rickety ships thinking there were sea monsters at the edge of the world?

I recall that classrooms were decorated on the theme, and that we did art drawings and projects that focused on this adventurer and discoverer.  We tried to imagine what the Native Americans that he and his sailors encounters thought when they saw those ships and saw people who were very light in complexion.  (Our teachers figured we were too young to understand venereal disease.)

These days some of the Native American tribes are particularly upset about the dedication of a day to the man. These days there is speculation that Christopher Columbus was NOT the first European to sail and land on a beach in the New World - America - a CONTINENT  that was either totally unknown or long forgotten.  For a very long time there was no opposition, speculation, or CONSPIRACY THEORIES attached to Columbus and his discovery of America, a voyage that was financed by Queen Isabella of Spain, and about the time that Jews were being converted or expelled from that country.  It was simply a day to be enjoyed.

So maybe it's true that Queen Isabella financed the trip, not for the greed of gold, but actually thought that Columbus could find some place for the Jews to go live?

The expulsion of Jews from various European countries over time is history.  It was thought that all the citizens of a country should be unified in the same religion, the same values and way of life and that it would bring unity.

And I've been reading around Hungary's position as a Christian  (Roman Catholic mostly) country that does not want to take in thousands of fleeing refugees from war torn Syria or anywhere else particularity Moslem.  I was thinking about how countries often have an OFFICIAL RELIGION but here in the United States at the founding of our country it was decided that religious freedom was key.  So recently there have been some statues of Satan popping up in this nation.

Although I understand that people who flee their countries are desperate, leaving everything behind, and risking their lives, and that many of these people end up dead because the boats they paid to get on sink or there is a stampede or illness, I frankly also understand that sometimes a country has to look at it's budget and it's own citizens who are living in poverty, and for Hungary that often means the Rom (gypsies), and admit to itself that it cannot afford to help. 

I'm not picking on Hungary here.  Hungary can fit in our state called "Indiana," but I actually think that until the United States houses all it's own homeless it should stop being parental to the world.

I look at it from a one person standpoint.  I have friends who I like and care about who are in need and maybe I can invite one of them over for dinner once in a while, and I can afford to share food, but I'm not able to pay their rent.

Hungary is also concerned about Moslems because of a history of being occupied by the Moslem Turks for a substantial amount of time, that Christianity and Christian values will be threatened by too many of these refugees.  It may be unpopular to say, but I can understand these fears, especially when it comes to the value, attitudes towards, and treatment of women.

The United States is thought of as a Satan country by Moslem terrorists.  That's why we had 9/11 et el.  A family of Moslems lives down the street peacefully and no one seems to think badly of them just on that basis, but as they are surrounded by people with Western Ways, they must tolerate knowing that their neighbors include people who have sex without being married, women with educations who work at jobs full time and don't have families, and so on.

Germany has taken thousands of refugees willingly.  Germany's economy can afford more.  But as I read around the subject, hours of reading, I found ONE EXCELLENT QUESTION that we should all be asking which is  WHY ARE THE WEALTHY MOSLEM DOMINATED COUNTRIES NOT TAKING THESE REFUGEES? 

Why are they running all the way to Europe?  Is it the reputation of these countries?  Is it that they perceive that the Western World is overall wealthy?  How many of them wish to make major changes in their point of view and lifestyle to fit in, contribute, and cooperate?

Let me make this personal once more.  One of my friends in need has eaten a dozen times at my table this year, and if I could not afford it I wouldn't invite him so no I don't feel used, and on occasion he brings a loaf of bread or a bottle of wine or some other contribution, but has never offered to wash a dish.  Compare him to the friend who is also in need, also eats, sometimes contributes,  but who always offers.

EXCERPT "On Saturday, as thousands filled the Cathedral Basilica of the Sacred Heart in Newark to capacity in celebration of Demjanovich’s beatification—the first step toward sainthood—Susan DeVoe knelt in a pew beside her children to pray for a second one.

DeVoe’s youngest son suffers from Choroideremia, a rare and currently incurable degenerative retinal disease that she says is slowly causing 9-year-old Mark to go blind. In the three years since her son was diagnosed, DeVoe says he’s lost 50 percent of his peripheral vision. The disease has also left him night-blind, she added.

“We pray for the help of Sister Demjanovich all the time,” DeVoe said, waiting in a pew with her son and daughter prior to the ceremony. “Through her, one man was cured of his blindness. We hope that she will intercede on our behalf to do it again, but we’re also here to celebrate the joy of this day.”

She was not alone. At Saturday’s beatification Mass, thousands of nuns, clergy and other Catholic faithful gathered to honor Demjanovich, as church leaders officially declared her a “blessed” person.

It is the first time such a ceremony has been held on U.S. soil, said Jim Goodness, a spokesperson for the Archdiocese of Newark. “This is a special day for New Jersey, “ he said. “What we have here is a moment is the church recognizing a woman of heroic virtue. And when we have an event where a person from our community has been recognized, that’s a powerful message for the rest of us.”

TO THOSE OF YOU WHO ARE A "WE BIT IRISH"

Many Hungarian Americans are also "a wee bit" Irish because Irish Catholic Immigrants and Hungarian Catholic Immigrants married, unified by their religious faith.

Like most Americans I've been keeping up on the news about the NSA and whistle blower Edward Snowden.  (I don't think what he did qualifies as espionage.)  I also agree that based on all that has been reported in the news and all the responses to it, including some people calling for his execution, that he cannot get a fair trial here, which makes me sad.

I've been thinking about the Soviet Union, and about Russia today.  I've been thinking about the fact that he applied for asylum in 21 countries, of which 6 we do not know.  Is Hungary one of the six that he has chosen not to reveal?

The United States wants him stopped.  He cannot travel over our airspace of the airspace of certain of our allies.  His passport, but not his citizenship has been revoked.

MY QUESTION IS DOES HE QUALIFY FOR CITIZENSHIP in ANY COUNTRIES BASED ON HERITAGE, such as Poland or Hungary?

TIME TO WORSHIP YOUR HUNGARIAN HERITAGE!

As you may know Hungarians in Hungary have no cultural tradition like Americans have developed over Halloween, and frankly I'm glad to know that.  That's because Halloween, which started out as a Celtic spiritual celebration of one's ancestors, and communication with them though dead in mystical ways, has turned into a celebration of violence and horror, and all sorts of strange and often criminal behavior, especially in films.

I don't find horror films enjoyable or worth watching.  I think they can do dangerous things to our psyche.  I don't want the bad dreams they inspire. 

I find All Soul's Day much more interesting.  This is a celebration of the dead, the ancestors, a remembrance of them, that occurs about this time in many cultures that have strong historical roots in Catholicism.  Even if you aren't religious or from an ethnic heritage that celebrates the ancestors at this time of the year,  dedicating an evening to gathering to discuss family history, going through old photos, or working on your genealogy, can be inspiring.

For instance, when I think of my ancestors who immigrated from Hungary, I know that some of them wanted to go back to Hungary, one of them managed to visit there several months a year for many years, but most got to the United States knowing there was no turning back. 

Still in a graveyard in Hungary there are a great number of ancestors of mine who I have never visited.  I can't help but wonder about these people who came before mine, and who genetically contributed to who I am.  I know about most of them not through stories because I was born after those who had the stories had died, but through genealogical research.  Of course I wish they would "speak" to me and nudge me towards the best records so that when I write of them, I can represent them truthfully.

At this time of year I light candles for some of those who have passed before me, hoping though that they have gone on to greater things in the afterlife and in their spiritual journey, hoping that they have not hung around this earth to watch over me which might delay their progress that they have earned through living decent lives, and being people you would want to know, and just may, someday.
