CHAOS : WILDFIRES AND DRAMATIC CHANGES IN POLITICS HAVE PEOPLE ON EDGE : IMMIGRATION

CHAOS : WILDFIRES AND DRAMATIC CHANGES IN POLITICS HAVE PEOPLE ON EDGE : IMMIGRATION

As the wildfires have consumed enough property and acreage to equal San Francisco or Miami, we the people of Southern California, are very concerned about the economic future of this part of the United States. Looters, arsonists, and other exploiters and criminals are taking advantage, as are landlords who are upping rents as well as other swindlers.

But as the physical plant burns down, more concerning is the burning down of America in another way.  Politics.

Lately, some people have been pointing out to me Prime Minister of Hungary, Viktor Orban, a possible alliance between him and President Donald Trump, and immigration policy. They point out that Orban built "a wall" (actually a fence) and then mention the "wall" partially built between the United States and Mexico. This, and other supposed evidence of alliances are constantly pointed out to me and I sense what is wanted is a reaction.

Well, I have a reaction.

I tell people that Hungary has welcomed thousands of Ukrainian refugees from that war that Russia started and that Orban, in his role with the European Union, has visited both Zelensky and Putin. The Hungarian people have taken in these war refugees, mostly women and children. That Hungary is dependent on Russian oil and that makes things tricky. I tell people that thousands demonstrated in the streets of Budapest for an end to that war and for peace, but Hungary, being a small country, doesn't make world news much, so few heard about it. (I did from a Hungarian relative who lives in Budapest six months of the year.)

I tell them that two thirds of the Hungarian population were murdered during the Ottoman occupation by Moslem Turks (over 150 years) and that is why Hungary, founded upon Christianity (specifically an alliance with Roman Catholicism) wants only Christian immigrants. I say that between that and the loss of a huge amount of territory known as Hungary after World War I and the 1920 Trianon Treaty, Hungarians are still fighting for national identity.

I also say that there is so much attention on blocking entry into the U.S. from Mexico but none on the much longer Canadian Border. If I were a terrorist I would not bother with the Mexican border. I would have a boat sail me up the coast; maybe in the middle of the night I'd row ashore in Malibu. Or maybe I would go to Canada and walk across the border there. There are lots of places to do so.

I also say that Trump claiming God saved him from a bullet so he could save America was disgusting; is he now claiming the Right of Kings? Himself as Biblical prophecy?

I actually see no link between true Christianity and the Prosperity Gospel or the exclusionary "Protestantism" of people who want to "round up" immigrants, that it sounds just like Germany, in an economic crisis pre the Holocaust and the "round up" of Jews, blamed for the economic problems, that I personally am fearful that is where we are heading.  No I do not want criminals entering the country. Criminality is not the same as people desperate for their lives and the lives of their children and families and we must acknowledge that. I feel the same way when I hear of "round ups" of homeless people. We are edging close to the "othering" that the Nazi's did to the Jews, comparing them to vermin rather than acknowledging their humanity.

Bigotry and discrimination and racism are coming back...

Be it the Ku Klux Klan or the Nazis or the Neo Nazis, NONE OF THIS IS OR EVER WAS CHRISTIANITY.  Remember, please, that the Nazi plan was to exterminate the Slavic people once the Jews were extinguished and to keep going.

RELOCATION anyone?  FORCED RELOCATION?

"REPOPULATING" Pacific Palisades?

Do I expect everyone to be "Christian?"  Actually, I do not.

Do I know of illegals?  Are they joking?! We have a huge "illegal" population in Southern California, and they are not all Mexican. Over the years I've met illegals from South Africa, from Jamaica, and Germany and Ireland, and yes - one lovely young woman from Hungary who chased love - many who came on a tourist visa and never left.

Also, this may shock some of my readers, but as a personal note, I have been approached to marry for the purposes of keeping an illegal immigrant in the country four times in my life.  One Mexican, One Guatamalan, One Orthodox Jew from Israel (really!), One Indian from India.  Approached on the street, in a store, or asked outright by a friend. Usually an effort to make me consider such a thing, which I would never do, includes an excruciatingly old fashioned idea that I should be ashamed to be unpartnered and would be desperate to join the overwhelming majority of married women. Or that my rent would be paid.

ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS OFTEN WORK FOR CASH. Now tell me employers are not depending on "casual" workers who are paid cash?  No benefits, no Social Security, no no no. Sometimes Americans pick up a casual laborer, work them all day, and then tell them to go f themselves, unpaid, under threat of the INS being informed of their presence: nasty evil people do that to them. So tell me, do you think so many would head here if they thought absolutely no one would hire them?  Hotels - Restaurants - the Tourist Industry - Cruises - really big on paying cash or extremely low off shore pay.

I'm not FOR illegal immigration, I hate criminality, especially when it comes to gang violence and drug and sex trafficking, but ONE NATION UNDER GOD, must have some empathy for the promise that so many of our ancestors had.

So I ask this question, who or what is your God?

Is it MONEY? Which is IDOLATRY?

STAY IN HUNGARY OR COME TO AMERICA? ADVICE YOU SHOULD HEAR

I was looking at some of my older posts. I realized I had posted about the expectations a person might have versus reality when it comes to leaving Hungary for the United States, with the notion of becoming a citizen here.  Here is more.

1) Do everything legally. It's true it will feel like there are many obstacles and will take time, however, in the end you will not fear deportation or other legal issues. We are interested in legal immigrants.  We fear the illegals who are coming into the country as criminals. By checking in with the governmental agencies and following the rules, which includes showing you can be a good citizen, you are proving you are not one of those who hurt our country.

2) Come with lots of money. If you have family, work, or sponsorship in a big, expensive city, that is one thing. If you are coming alone especially I would not advise anyone to go where the cost of living is killing the locals which usually also means there are housing shortages. Smaller cities have more to offer right now. Do your research. There can be dramatic differences in the lifestyle from one city to another or one neighborhood and another. How much? ($20,000 American dollars is probably the amount you need to rent for a year, plus pay your basic necessities.)

3) Connect with the local Hungarian-American social club. Make friends, network, and speak your language. If you do obtain citizenship you will always also be Hungarian also. Although over the generations ethnic identity fades, it will always be your heritage.  And that's a good thing.

4) Speak decent English. I know, so many Hungarian-Americans don't speak Hungarian and it's not fair. In some parts of the United States, speaking Spanish is also very helpful. You probably already have more knowledge of English than a typical American has of Hungarian.

5) Don't come via a promise of marriage to an American. There are many solicitations on the Internet advertising Beautiful Women from countries such as Hungary, Poland, Ukraine, and so on. Think about this: With so many millions of American woman available, what makes a man solicit a woman for marriage from a country far away?  I will tell you that some of these men expect obedience or for the woman to be submissive far more than an American woman would be. You will be very far away from a support system if you want to leave him and he has monopolized you in that case. There are plenty of women here who are traditional enough to want to marry and be stay at home mothers and wives, so that is not the issue that is keeping him from marriage to an American.

Even if you meet an American man who is traveling in Hungary and have a good time with him or spend time with him, be careful, ask a lot of questions, perhaps visit him here and go back before any decision is made. There are good American men and love is love, but there are also, unfortunately men who lie and intend to turn a woman into a prostitute or sex traffic her. There are gangs and organized crime organizations that do this. So - I cannot express enough that you must have connections with people here, through family, school, work.

6) Consider becoming educated here. Although there are many famous and expensive universities and colleges, there are many state run colleges and lower cost community colleges. Ask about out of country and out of state fees as well as scholarships. However, do not believe it if a school claims that after you graduate they will place you in employment. Your student Visa may run out, so consider also if your American educational credits will transfer to other schools in Hungary or Europe.

7) Once here, say hello to your Hungarian Consulate. Don't wait for a bad situation.  Let them know you are here and they may be able to help.

HUNGARY's "GREAT WALL" AGAINST ILLEGAL IMMIGRATION : CHRISTIAN VALUES EXPLOITED?

One article on Hungary's policy of anti illegal immigration, in particular the massive number of refugees from war-torn parts of the middle east, said Hungary is building a Great Wall, bringing to mind THE GREAT WALL OF CHINA, which was built to keep "Barbarians" called the Mongols, out. You may recall that there is DNA evidence as well as oral histories of the historical invasion of the Mongols into Hungary.  I myself believe I have some Mongolian or Asian DNA.

Is Prime Minster Viktor Orban RIGHT when he says that if the refugees will not stop coming and that their sheer numbers will CHANGE THE CULTURES OF THE COUNTRIES THEY RESIDE IN.  Well, I think so.  Hungary currently fits into the United States state of Indiana.  Imagine if millions of people attempted to go live in Indiana.

The fact is that there are people all around the world that wish they were somewhere else, people who would have a better life if they moved somewhere else, but when you are a refugee and you KNOW you are taking your life, possibly the life of your whole family, at risk with travel and all else, JUST FOR THE CHANCE that you will defy odds and find a way to make your living.  Though desperate, you still must consider that, wherever you end up, you may have to change to fit in.  Granted, you may have no idea what really the realities are, what the sacrifices will be to have the benefits, until you are already in a refugee camp, or living in a country where the weather is too cold for you. But such is the situation for many, who find themselves just existing and waiting.

MEDITATION on the MIGRANT CARAVANS HEADING TO THE UNITED STATES

I've been reading around the MIGRANT CARAVAN, specifically the plight of Hondurans who say they cannot continue to survive in that Country and the thousands of people headed for the border of the United States.  There are so very many thousands heading this way that I have to pause and think they should too.  In fact I think the migrants should take Mexico up on it's offers to provide for now.

1) The reason why they are heading to Tijuana is that they want into CALIFORNIA, a sanctuary state.  Not Texas or Arizona.

2) There are thousands of homeless who need HELP FIRST here in the United States.

3) Spanish speaking immigrants in California no doubt tend to have their own culture and their own economic interplay. There are many jobs that require applicants to speak both Spanish and English but overall if you are a Spanish only speaking immigrant, you're going to have a more difficult time making a living wage.

4) California is too expensive to make less than a living wage.  This is not a good place to start off on minimum wage or cash jobs.

5) Those who brought evidence such as news articles or photos that prove that they are or have been living in danger in Honduras have a chance.  So do the LGTB migrants.

6) Don't do something stupid like climb the wall or get involved in violent actions. Really, this is the time to basically WAIT and the WAITING is going to be a long time. What to do besides eat and sleep? I think read.  Read the news.  Read about legal immigration.  Read about the history and government of Mexico and the United States.

7) That the caravans were organized to protect the majority who travel together - I get it.

8) When my ancestors came to America from Europe they did so legally at the time.
Hungarians who did not process citizenship before World War I had their process stalled.     They were one of the ethnic groups now considered to be suspicious.

9) If a person has a family or friend willing to support and sponsor them, give them a chance.  This is how it was done in the past. For instance, people on steam ships had to say where they were going and who they were going to live with. Some of them carried the letters they received making these offers with them.

10) An old friend once told me that "Mexico is not a poor country."  Overall I think it would be easier to adjust to Mexico's culture than the United States.

TO THE INCOMING IMMIGRANT - COME LEGAL - A TRUE STORY of A GERMAN WOMAN ILLEGAL HERE FOR YEARS

LEGAL IMMIGRATION is the only way to go.  I know that some of you reading my blog are thinking of coming to the United States and things are a bit "wonky" right now.  Whatever your situation, do it the right way.  DO IT LEGAL.  Even if you have to wait.  Use your wait time to earn more money to bring with you, to study language, to research what life is like in various parts of the country; Some cities are considerably less expensive than others.

I post this having just learned that a woman who came here in the late 1980s from Germany, college educated too, is STILL NOT LEGAL.

Let me tell you the story.

I had a friend from a rich family.  In spending time with her and her family, I learned that her older brother, who I will call Noah, had taken a year off from his college, as many rich kids do, to travel around Europe.  Her family had been in the USA for several generations so he was not looking to meet relatives left behind.  However, he was very interested in what had happened to the Jews because they were Jewish but not at all religious.  When he was in Germany and on a train he met a young woman - not Jewish.

We don't know if they actually had an affair or fell in love or what happened on the train or after they got off the train or how much time they actually spent together or if she traveled with him as a tour guide or what.  Surely she knew he was an American and from Los Angeles and she might have suspected he came from money.

The brother came back to the US just in time to go back to his college for fall semester.  He was living with his parents in a suburb where houses even back then were being sold for a million dollars or more. My friend and other siblings all had trust funds for college someday.  But they were not showy or snobby people.

One day his stay at home mother answered a knock on the door.  There stood this young German woman asking for Noah.  He wasn't home.  He wasn't expecting her.  The mother, being a polite woman, allowed the young German woman in, told her to wait in their living room, brought out some food and drink.  They waited.  The German woman explained to the mother, rather innocently, that she had come to be with Noah!  The mother was shocked but tried to hide her emotion.  What she didn't know about her son!  (And while they were not religious and not automatically against one of their children marrying someone who wasn't Jewish, they simply preferred they do.)

Eventually Noah came home late at night, and there sat this German woman.  By now it was clear that she had not made hotel reservations.  So the family accepted that she would stay in the spare room.  Noah was twice as shocked as his mother.

The German woman had come to the United States, following her heart, but on a tourist Visa.  Noah was earnest about his education.  He didn't want to live with a girlfriend.  The family didn't want to go against their son by having her in their home more than a couple weeks.  Of course, the German woman decided there was only one thing to do, find a cash-paying job as a nanny in someone else's house where she would live, over stay her tourist Visa, anything to be near Noah.  A college educated bilingual nanny can easily get such a job.

Noah began to resent her.  The family did feel sorry for her.  They could not believe that Noah hadn't encouraged her.  He maintained he did not.

A couple years later, Noah had finished college and went to another state to begin a career.  He accepted the German woman to live with him, again working as a nanny for cash.  Their living together didn't go well.  He was sure he didn't want to marry her, even if she was loving, kind, and hard working.  Soon the German woman was back to Los Angeles without him.  Truthfully, and maybe this is hard for some of  you to understand, the family felt that their son owed it to this girl to marry her, and that if he did not, then he had brought trouble and shame to them.  He refused.

I had heard that she had saved every dime she could and had hired an immigration attorney to make it all right for her.  She was in what we call, "deep shit, excuse the French."  She gave this attorney thousands of dollars in cash.  HE KEPT IT AND DID NOTHING FOR HER.  Though the family was rich, when they ran this past their attorney, he advised that this was not unusual.  And that there was nothing he could do that wouldn't mean jail time, fines, deportation for the German woman.

So this woman, college educated too, in love or hoping for marriage, following her heart without an invitation, is STILL working for cash as a nanny, still illegal.  As I hear it Noah is almost banished by his family and the father has been half supporting her, but still, the day is going to come when this man dies. The siblings don't hate the German girl, but they feel she cannot be in their lives.

I also tell this story because of the incorrect notion that almost all illegal immigrants to the U.S. particularly the South West are from Mexico.  Here in Los Angeles there are many illegal Irish (often working in bars and restaurants) and other Europeans.  They may be better hidden among the non-Hispanic population.

Meanwhile, I assure you that legal immigration has been the way to citizenship for many of my neighbors.  A British woman here to act in the film business has a sister in social services, disabled in Great Britain.  She has been awarded duel citizenship so she can freely take care of her sister's situation there as needed.  Moslem refugees from Pakistan - on their way to citizenship.  A neighbor from Bosnia - a refugee years ago - a citizen - he wasted no time.  Business owners who have brought an educated, multilingual cousin from Argentina - in process.

If you wish to immigrate, go to the closest consulate and ask for information on the right way to do it.  It may not be fast or easy but ultimately it is the right way.  And I feel that if I were ever to visit or wish to stay in Hungary for any amount of time I would do the same, honoring the rules and regulations in place in Hungary.  There are Americans who consider moving to Hungary for their retirement.  The refugee crisis in Hungary (and other countries) is of great concern to them when they imagine living as senior citizens in another country.  Don't overstay a tourist Visa, expect that a romance or affair or fling that you have is going to result in marriage and a legal stay...

BANNING CITIZENS OF CERTAIN OTHER COUNTRIES FROM COMING TO THE US? NOTHING NEW

Over the last few days, as President Donald Trump attempts to fulfill his campaign promises, I've engaged in conversations with people from a number of different heritage backgrounds and political viewpoints, including some Moslem- American men who said to me, "Obama did more to get rid of Moslems than Trump ever will!"  I have a very politically correct friend who once was studying to be a Catholic priests who is sending me a lot of anti-Trump and pro-immigration articles.

THIS IS WHAT I'VE BEEN TELLING THEM.

Banning people from certain countries from immigrating, or stopping people of certain ethnic backgrounds as suspicious by possible association is NOTHING NEW in the history of the United States.  Consider the story of the Hungarians who came to the United States before World War I.  My Hungarian ancestor was certain that once he left Hungary he was not going back to work there.  Certain also that he and his sons would have to leave agricultural work and prepare for industry or have skills, he is said to have had the foresight to provide them some education prior to immigration.  They sacrificed, sold everything, worked long and hard, and had to give up on any notions they long held on to about coming from nobility or working for nobility.

My ancestor wasted no time once he got to the United States in declaring his intent to become a citizen. He was already in midlife, had seen the death of his first wife, had remarried, and was the father of many children. After five years of working at any kind of work he could get, while not a citizen, becoming a member of a church and community, making friends and networking as much as he could, and staying in the same town (where he and his sons advertised their desire for work in the gazetteer), he wasted no time in filing for his second papers.  Seven years after arriving in the U.S., give or take a few months, he was declared a citizen.  His wife and minor children also became citizens so they did not have to apply when they became 18.  His older children who immigrated did their own citizenship the same way.  Luckily, all well before World War I broke out in Europe.

Many Hungarians did not really want to give up on Hungary or could not because of family farms and other obligations there, and they went back and forth, earning income here, becoming seasonal workers, often spending summers there working the land.  Those who did not become citizens because they felt unsure, found themselves in "the pickle" when this World War broke out.  THE UNITED STATES SUSPENDED ALL REQUESTS FOR CITIZENSHIP considering Hungarians, and many other ethnic groups from various countries to be, potentially, consorting with the enemy.  If you look at newspapers from that era of immigration, the war, and afterwards, you will find these people referred to as "foreigners."  You will see headlines also and lists, naming the "foreigners" who had completed their citizenship.

Without any of the methods we have today, our government could not so easily look into each and every individual's worthiness or desire to be considered exceptional.  Today the large numbers of people seeing citizenship or entering and remaining in the United States to work makes it difficult even with these methods, which are also thought to be privacy invading.

Although the way the Executive Order has been played out isn't good, and clearly the ways and means needed to be directed in more detail, for instance that those already here with Green Cards and incoming, should be allowed in, though personally I think a brief discussion with each person by immigration as they come in again is hardly discrimination or harassment, and the news services are having a lot of business detailing each case, the fact is my most politically correct friends keep welcoming immigrants and talking against discrimination, but have never been gang raped, had their daughter's sex trafficked, witnessed horrific atrocities, and have no fear of being ROUNDED UP BY ISIS, lined up and shot in the head or beheaded.  I dare say that EUROPE, where wars have been played out and where terrorism has been much worse than events, other than 9/11 here which did have a terrible effect on American Moral, have played out, ARE NOT THAT CONFIDENT.  My politically correct friends are NOT AFRAID.

WHY NOT?

BECAUSE THEY ARE USED TO AND EXPECT our GOVERNMENT TO PROTECT US, the citizens!

Some of these people are also ANTI GUN/WEAPONRY.  They do not think they need to protect themselves from a more personal situation they might encounter in their lives.

THAT IS PRIVILEGE!

I sometimes wish they had, as I have, gone to hear people who lived through the Nazi concentration camps speak.  It happened fast.  People didn't believe the rumors.  Vast numbers were rounded up and taken to their deaths.

That is why my position is in the middle.  WE DO NEED OUR GOVERNMENT'S PROTECTION.  WE DO NEED TO ACCEPT THAT THIS IS SO.  We are dependent on our spy agencies and our military and our police to keep us safe, especially when we refuse to own or use guns or other weapons ourselves.  And, we do need to honor citizens first, and those who obeyed our immigration laws to enter our country next.  Illegal immigrants are always taking their chances, but want to think it is unfair if they get caught.  How do you get caught?  By being criminal!

IS A WISH FOR PEACE JUST RIDICULOUS? THEN CALL ME THAT! THE STATE OF THE STATE OF CALIFORNIA

The recent Presidential election left many Americans, including me, embarrassed and exhausted.  The winner, Donald Trump, might just make America Great Again, one of many campaign promises he made, but he seems to be a mercurial person.

Many people I've spoken with have told me that they expect campaigns to get nasty.  It was just so nasty, it left me wishing and hoping that we can all hit the restart button, and begin again, in brotherhood and peace, with not politicians but with leadership.

AM I JUST RIDICULOUS?  Maybe so, but if there is any time of the year in the Christian world where we can have such hopes, I think that's the Christmas time.   It's become the most materialistic time of the year.  It should be the most idealistic.

It's coming up on us fast, and so is the swearing in of Donald Trump as the President of the United States. People I meet are not idealistic about his - regime.  They are afraid they will go without health insurance or housing and be out on the street.  It's enough to make me think MAYBE CALIFORNIA SHOULD BECOME ITS OWN COUNTRY... WE'RE ALREADY BIGGER THAN SOME!  THE MENTALITY HERE IS JUST - DIFFERENT.  Some people are suggesting we leave the Union - for four years or the end of Trumps regime, whatever comes first.

No, that's not likely to happen.

In particular to my state, California, there is a lot of fears about illegal immigration, that there will be "sweeps," and people will be taken away, like the Nazis taking away the Jews in the Holocaust.

One of my friends is a librarian for the city, of Mexican origin, her great grandfather walked into Arizona, worked full time there, and founded a family that has done well for itself.  On the library desk I found print outs that had been left there by immigration advocates, in both English and Spanish, intended for illegal residents to hand to any police officer that might start asking them questions, stating that they are going to stay silent.  I took one for my wallet, even though I'm legal, as a reminder that I don't necessarily have to answer the questions asked by an officer, though I don't think I'm headed for trouble with the law.  I told her that I did not think there would be sweeps.  Our mayor and police said they would not cooperate if ordered to.  However, if someone commits a violent crime or is dealing drugs, especially if that person has broken Federal law, then I would not be surprised if they were deported.

What is so difficult about becoming a citizen?  If you come legal, it's not!  I have a neighbor from Hungary getting his citizenship.  Another neighbor who got his a decade ago came as a refugee from Kosovo.  There is a Moslem family, peaceable, who are refugees from Pakistan, also in process.   Another neighbor, has just gotten dual citizenship - Great Britain and the U.S.  Yes, there was time involved, and money, and tests, but it worked out.  None of them ever felt their stay here was threatened because they were doing the right thing from the start.

I believe that if you do the right thing from the start, you will be honored.

Recent killing rampages by people of Moslem origin especially, have basically sanctified what Trump is talking about, and that is, that we have let in all sorts of people who do not deserve to be here.

Do we really need more immigrants?  We welcome the educated, but Blue Collar American Trump advocates want their jobs back here and now.  Here is the hitch.  Illegal immigrants are not protected by labor laws and can be hired for cash and less than minimum wage and they are not likely to complain about the worst conditions.  Some of them are afraid that becoming legal will mean no longer getting work.  They also break the Unions, simply because they are willing to be underpaid.  It's not hard to find them.  I suspect that every construction site has some.  Some dirty people take terrible advantage of them including dumping them off after a days hard labor without the promised pay, and the threat to call the INS on them.

It's kind of like the situation for background actors for film.  Everyone who does it wants to get into SAG, the union, because the pay and benefits are then decent, but everyone says that once they got into SAG, their bookings diminished, so they worked less, and made about the same money.

California decided that a person didn't need to be legal to have an ID or a drivers license, which means they have to be insured for accidents, they can have library cards, they can have medical care at County hospitals, and they can have education.  Why?  Because California decided that these benefits benefit everyone, not just the illegal person.

Much is made of Mexican gangs.  They exist.  They shoot  and kill each other and innocent people.  However, there are gangs of Armenians and Russians, and other ethnic groups as well, and sometimes it seems like identity theft and more sophisticated frauds are committed by these more educated criminals

So, will a wall actually keep people out - or in?  If you read around it, you'll learn that the wall has been an ongoing project in the Obama administration, and that it isn't always a physical wall.

Our illegal immigrants are not all criminals and our criminals are not all Mexican.
