VOLCANIC HUNGARY: THE SMITHSONIAN VOLCANO DATABASE

With earthquakes and long dormant volcanos erupting and seemingly linked, I thought I would do some research into VOLCANIC HUNGARY, knowing that the Tokaj area and wine industry is often cited as the grape vines benefitting from the soil and taste of the wine.

FIRST THE SMITHSONIAN! SMITHSONIAN NATURAL HISTORY- VOLCANOS - HUNGARY

Volcano Name
Volcanic
Region
Primary Landform

Bakony-Balaton Highland Central European Volcanic Province Cluster
Little Hungarian Plain Central European Volcanic Province Cluster
Nograd-Southern Slovakia

THESE LAST WERE ACTIVE WHEN DINOSAURS WALKED THE EARTH.. the Pleistocene period.

THESE ARE CONSIDERED EXTINCT VOLCANOS, however, consider this: In Russia the Krasheninnikov Volcano awoke and erupted after at least 400 years dormant - some articles said 600 years... The eruption came after an 8.8 earthquake which lead to tsunami warnings.

HUNGARY and UKRAINE : OPTIMISTICALLY HOPEFULLY PRAYERFULLY

I recently met a neighbor whose parents are in their 70's and going to Hungary to travel.  The neighbor expressed to me that Orban's government really is fascist and that Orban and Putin are buddies and that the people of Hungary are increasingly "brainwashed" that what's happening in the Ukraine in the war that Russia started is "all the Ukrainian's fault." Further the neighbor stated that the people they know in Hungary who were all 'liberal media' have lost their jobs.

The neighbor and her parents have been warned to keep their mouths shut and get along while they travel for a month in the country.  I'm sure they are mostly seeing relatives.  The parents come from a family that went through World War II in that country and stories of horror are embedded in the family consciousness.

I don't see how this jives with the fact that so many Ukrainian refugees have fled the country to Poland and to Hungary (and to Canada, and the U.S.) and more per capita have been taken in by Hungarians.  There is a border shared and there have long been routes into the country from Ukraine and Poland, as we know from military history.  But back then the weaponry wasn't as it is today, with satellites, drones, various air vehicles, and the enormous and devastating bombs.  The threat that Russia will keep on going, even if it ends up being a country in which there are few men to marry, is real.

I worry that the attitude that the brutalization of civilians blamed on "All Ukrainian's fault" is just like telling a woman whose husband beats her, that it is all her fault.  If this is true, then there is also a tolerance to the violation of other's people's property, bodies, families - all of it CAN be "deserved."  Bullies and Power-Over win.

I thought we ALL knew better.

As a Hungarian-American I'm most certainly living here, and have an American attitude, but one of the reasons I blog at MAGYAR AMERICAN is that I want to uphold the pride of people of Hungarian heritage and culture. I cannot be a "Hungarian Nationalist" but I can see that value. Hungary is landlocked and two thirds smaller than it was at one time and I have reasoned that Orban has been faced with the challenges that come from the country being destroyed in the past by Moslem Turks/Ottomon Empire, and other, various invasions, including the Nazi's. He has to redefine what it means to be Hungarian, and surely that is not a lackey of Russian or the Soviet Union.

The other aspect of a Hungarian thinking "It's not so bad." or "It will all work out," optimistically or hopefully or prayerfully, is that maybe they do know it is bad, that it's a treading water experience. I do believe that Putin's goal is to revive The Soviet Union" perhaps as his last great feat before he himself passes into the next world.  But at what cost to the Russian people, even the Russian army, with so much loss?

Do not be deceived.  It is hell on earth over there in Ukraine.  One may get on with their lives numb from or unable to tolerate more bad, real news, but think again because thousands have had their lives destroyed when not even a year ago they were like you and me, just going about their business, perhaps not at all interested in politics, and also believing the world was moving to be a better place.

ACKNOWLEDGING THE PAIN AND SUFFERING CAUSED BY SENSELESS WAR - SHUT UP DONALD TRUMP

I've been listening to and watching news on UKRAINE and the invasion by Russia as well as, now, Belarus, feeling sick. I'm also totally disgusted with ex President Donald Trumps open mouthy admiration for Putin.  Even an ex-President can have personal opinions, but as I see it, this is treasonous behavior.  As a public figure who was our President, his inability to know what is appropriate is astounding. There is also a total lack of sensitivity to the fact that this is not a war in which an army faces and army but a brutal attack on innocent civilians.

I'M LUCKY THAT I LIVE IIN A COUNTRY WHERE OPINIONS ARE DIVERSE AND I CAN EXPRESS MINE. I'm glad I can blog and say so.

WHAT CAN WE SAY ABOUT SPIRITS IN HUMAN  BODIES WHO ARE OPPORTUNISTS AND USERS, WHO WAIT FOR WEAKNESS TO PREY ON OTHERS?

We can recognize EVIL.

It is very difficult to live in this world when we feel we cannot have impact to turn it right to good.

Life is complicated and difficult and we have to seek out beauty and goodness.

There is a song "Let there Be peace on earth and let it begin with me..."

UKRAINE : AN ILLUSTRATED HISTORY by PAUL ROBERT MAGOCSI : MAGYAR AMERICAN BOOK REVIEW

C 2007 University Toronto Press

I enjoyed this book, which probably needs another chapter or two, because of what has been happening in recent events with the possibility Russia will invade Ukraine and various countries - NATO - offering resistance of some sort. I thought the author did a good job of being unbiased, using population statistics, and taking us through events through history including border changes and so on.  Reading this book helped me better understand just how complicated it has been. Maps and photos are so helpful.  What impressed me is how passionate people have been about the politics and economic aspects of life in this part of the world and how violent it has been.

Like Hungarians in Romania, there is a sizeable population of ethnic Russians in Ukraine. It seems there long been various ethnicities, from tribal days forward, in this land.

Still, it is my not so humble opinion that the real reason Russia wants the Ukraine is not just to expand its already sizeable turf or because it wants its borders to be up against many a European nation. I think it is because the Ukraine has fertile farmland and poverty and that it is a 'breadbasket' that can feed people and with the possibility of low wage agricultural workers.  In the United States a 'breadbasket' can be a place like the central valley of California where the low wage workers are migrants, often from Mexico.

If I were someone who could influence Russia - Putin - I would say to him that Russia has the opportunity to create new cities and use new technologies for the benefit of people there and can lead the way towards new forward thinking culture and society - there in the country they already have - and that is where they should put resources rather than military actions. I realize that much of Russia is considered too difficult because of the weather to easily sustain people at this point, but I think this is possible.  Who knows?  If Global warming is the continuing trend this cold place may become most desireable.

I wonder how many people self-identify as solely Ukrainian these days.

The history of this area of the word includes the Greeks and the Scythians, the Khazars anbd the Kievan Rus, the Mongols and the Tartars, and just about every kind of Slavic ethnicity.

In this book you will be guided with knowledge of what was Ukraine during the Austrian Empire of 1772-1815, in 1875 Austria-Hungary, after World War I including the West Ukrainian National Republic. Soviet Ukraine of 1932, lands in Poland circa 1930, what the situation is with Rusyn (Ruthenian) people living in Romania and Czechoslovakia in 1930, Carpatho-Ukraine in the World War II era of 1939-1941, and Soviet Ukraine in 1945.

I wish for peace.

100th ANNIVERSARY of THE HOLY VISIONS at FATIMA - Another Miracle Revealed?

Since the 100th anniversary of the Miracle at Fatima - Portugal is upon us, there's been a lot of news about this event.  There wasn't just one sighting, there were a series of meetings back in 1917.  The World War I era.

If you're interested in listening to a recent program about the controversial "3rd Secret" you might want to go to YouTube and search for Coast to Coast AM - Fatima. - Guest Peter Levenda.

First check the story by Joseph Ronechen concerning the miraculously untangled rosaries.
NATIONAL CATHOLIC REGISTER - EYEWITNESS of THE DAY THE SUN DANCED

TEASER/EXCERPT: The woman continued her miracle story. “People put their rosaries on the ground. They knew what way the Blessed Mother would face, and they put their rosaries out there in front of the place. [The pile of] rosaries were shaped like a cross. [After the apparition] There were so many that when everybody went to get their rosaries, they were all tangled up. And they were trying to find the right rosary.

***
Of course it's said that 70,000 people assembled to see the Miracle of the sun dancing in the sky.  (I do wonder about the size of the crowd simply because sometimes these estimates grow through the years.) Many people have since thought that maybe this was a UFO, specifically an alien spaceship and that the Blessed Mother apparition was either a hologram, the actual Blessed Mother (perhaps in her energy rather than corporeal body), or an alien acting as a Blessed Mother.  These science oriented skeptics of course think there is some conspiracy with the Catholic Church. With a massive world wide number of Catholics, what a great way to get the message across that Russia would need to go back to being prayerful and Catholic?

***
What does it take to become a Catholic Saint?  Martyrdom for the Faith, a life of amazingly impactful works, or - the clincher - miracles of healing attributed to you.  Two of the Fatima children, who died not long after the apparitions, which was one of the things the Blessed Mother told the children, have been canonized by Pope Francis.

NATIONAL CATHOLIC REGISER : FRANCISCO and JACINTA of FATIMA CANNONIZED
EXCERPT: Pope Francis on Saturday officially declared Francisco and Jacinta Marto saints of the Catholic Church in front of hundreds of thousands of pilgrims at the Fatima Shrine in Portugal — teaching that even young children can become saints.
“For the honor of the Blessed Trinity, the exaltation of the Catholic faith and the increase of the Christian life, by the authority of our Lord Jesus Christ, and of the holy apostles Peter and Paul, and our own, after due deliberation and frequent prayer for divine assistance, and having sought the counsel of many of our brother bishops, we declare and define Blesseds Francisco Marto and Jacinta Marto to be saints,” Pope Francis exclaimed May 13 as the crowd roared with applause.

Every day there seems to be another announcement of the discovery of another planet or moon of a planet that has the chemistry that we think is necessary for some form of life - even if it be tiny microbes.  So to me it is entirely possible that we are not alone in the universe.  And if there are beings like us, then the Creator must have created them too.  But are they Good Guys or Bad Guys?  Do they want to help us earthlings advance scientifically or spiritually?  If they're visiting our planet, I sure hope so!

CHRISTMAS EVE PRAYER FOR (IMPOSSIBLE?) PEACE

Recently I was with a group of people and one woman asked us all to pray for the survivors of Pearl Harbor.  She was of the generation - some call it "the Silent generation" and others "the Greatest generation" - in which her peers were involved in World War II.  World War II is not so long ago in history, but what is sure is that it remains a Hollywood film favorite subject, while other wars such as Korean - Viet Nam - and the whole big mess of the Middle East have comparatively few films made about them.  Unpopular wars, underreported wars, and wars that are no longer called wars, are going on all the time.

I spoke up and said, "Let's pray for peace instead."

Don't know that my blurt was appreciated, but to me all that was required was a moment of silence or a mental bookmark.  You see, I don't actually think there ever will be Peace of Earth, but in the West, at Christmas time, the notion of Peace of Earth is popular.  Consider that sometimes in war there are agreements that for that one day of the year, Christmas, there is a "peace fire."

And, I really do think that peace on earth has to begin with each individual, and in Christianity the prayer of Saint Francis of Assisi is my favorite.  Yet, for all the empathy called for, in order to understand and forgive others, sometimes I've been considered naïve, a fool, and exploitable for all the give I have.  I've been at times sneered at for my hope, faith, belief, or innocence.  I have not been testy, suspicious.  I haven't asked enough questions.  (These days an exploiter will blame the victim, saying, "you didn't do your due diligence.")

So, while I don't think there will ever be peace of earth, and am making no claim to perfection and a straight ticket to heaven, the notion of heaven is very influential.  Heaven allows us to imagine a place that is peaceful and joyful, and where everyone else is good!

This is my open mind set for the holiday season.

A week ago I told myself I should start decorating.  I managed to get a string of lights up around the door.  I pulled out my small artificial Christmas tree, only to discover that a piece of plastic had broken off while it was in storage.  Three days later I got out my glue gun and tried to fix the leg on without that piece.  It sort of worked.

I went off to Trader Joes, were I planned to buy all the ingredients needed to manifest five different cupcake recipes which I wanted to make to gift.  It's been years since I made or gifted baked goods and I remembered the days when Christmas visiting meant indulging in baked goods from many different ethnic backgrounds.  Family and friends had married into Italians, Russians, Ukrainians, Poles, Slovaks, Ruthenians, Irish, Germans -  we have a Persian - that whole mix that is United States of America - everyone making traditional cookies, cakes, pies, that their ancestors made.

As I made way to the location, I passed by an Armenian banquet hall.  Someone must have had a wedding, ordered in numerous floral ornaments for the tables, and when unboxing found one was broken.  Outside on the sidewalk was a beautiful gold sprayed branch that had blooming rose petals glue gunned to it!  One rose had fallen off and there was a glob of glue.  I took one look at it and grabbed it.  At home I decided not to use the artificial pine tree at all, but hang my small ornament collection off the branches of this bare limbed "tree."  I set it up and it's beautiful.  My dog lay in her swirl of blankets looking at the pretty lights.

Then I made the cupcakes.  Pumpkin oatmeal spice with no icing.  Walnut flax seed with vanilla powdered sugar,  dried cherries in the mix and topped with cherry jam,  and finally Ghirardelli Chocolate (from San Francisco) inside and melted atop plain white cake.  Improvising with cardboard shirt boxes, wrapping paper and tissue, I made up four boxes.  One delivered to a friend who lives in an assisted living.  I assured him, I used no milk, no butter, no corn, corn starch, or corn syrup.  (I used safflower oil, spring water, brown sugar, real sugar, flour, flax seed, oatmeal, real vanilla.)  Then off to the neighbor who a few weeks ago did me a huge favor even though he barely knows me.  (He came to the US as a refugee from Bosnia.)  This morning, I delivered another to a business that I frequently visit, me and the dog.  The people there have fed her endless treats.  And then I went to visit another friend who has leant me films this year, some of which I have to return, and learned he has moved!

Such is the state of art and science at this time in my life.

I wish all my readers, whatever your ethnic origins or religious beliefs, at least one day of complete and total peace, inside yourself and with the world.

CRYING FOR INNOCENT VICTIMS of TERRORISM - EVIL and BRAINWASHING : OPINON by MAGYAR AMERICAN

Friday night, late, a friend of mine called me with a throb in his throat.  "Did you hear about the terrorism in Paris?  I've met some of the musicians that play in that band! " He explained that they are not a heavy metal or death metal band but took the name of their band as a kind of joke.  Whatever, they do play rock and roll, which is offensive to Moslems, and the terrorists targeted people out to have a good time, if not sex, drugs, and rock and roll.

I had not heard about this latest act of terrorism by Moslem EXTREMISTS, as I'd been feeling under the cold, windy, weather and was laying in bed under a crochet blanket with my dog and reading a book, so I told him I would call him back.  Within fifteen minutes, thanks to the internet on my low budget cell phone, I was able to tell him that the band members themselves were OK.  From that point on I read at least a hundred articles from news services all over the world, especially The Daily Mail - UK, but also the New York Times, Washington Post, and many others, searching for the latest tidbit of information that would bring the whole picture into focus.

Sadly, I will tell you what the whole picture is in one word:  EVIL

And that evil is prevailing makes me feel tearful and depressed.  This morning I wanted to stay in bed under the covers and not get on with my day but I snapped out of it while taking a hot shower and then dressing and putting on makeup and perfume and leaving the house.  I put on my best appearance anyway despite feeling so down.  I knew that I could not quit living my life out of fear...

The American Holiday of Thanksgiving is less than two weeks away and is the beginning of our holiday season with Christmas and the New Year coming up fast and this is the time of year when most people make an effort to share, give generously, and be more loving and tolerant, beginning with their own family and then to strangers

I've already bought slices of turkey breast, stuffing bread, pineapple, onions and garlic and ginger, an acorn squash, sweet potato, zucchini, and other ingredients to make a small American feast.  But I'm planning on attending a local community celebration that I went to once years ago that happens to be put on by a local Jewish congregation and is open to everyone of any faith.  It is held outdoors rain or shine and wind and cold might keep me away, but I was looking forward to it, and thinking of asking this particular friend along.  I can easily make my personal thanksgiving meal for the following Sunday's meal.

Now that Moslem EXTREMISTS are killing the innocent outside of SYRIA (where even children have been beheaded and women have been killed for refusing to be sex slaves) well, their TERRORISM has worked.  Paris is terrified.  Certainly London is.  But let's not fool ourselves into thinking that terrorism only takes place in big cities.

I'm afraid to go to this community gathering where hundreds of people will be on Thanksgiving, especially because it is being held at a Jewish temple.  I also hesitate to take the subway.  I fear that the subway would be a great target during rush hour.  Yet I know that our HOMELAND SECURITY and other governmental agencies are doing their best to find terrorists and other criminals who mean to hurt or kill others before they can do so.  Still, I think most people I've been talking to feel a bit paranoid.

There is only one way to understand people who blow themselves up, in an effort to kill others.

THEY HAVE BRAIN WASHED and are in a CULT.

So while I cry for the innocent victims, I decided today, knowing that people from all over the world can read this blog, to talk to you about BRAIN WASHING and CULTS.

What is the difference between a  regular religion and a cult?

A cult often expects you to cut yourself off from your family and friends, which is to say, your support group, and gradually you are surrounded only by people who are indoctrinating you. They isolate you as part of their ownership of you. In a cult, your mail may be censored or kept from you.  You may be denied use of communications such as the phone or e-mail.  You may not be allowed to leave the cult, not even to go out to the doctors or shopping, alone or without permission. You may be expected to give them your money, maybe even sell your house and give them all the money from the sell, and move to live with or near others in the cult.  Without the finances to leave them, they now have more control over you.  They will put you to work, often extensive volunteer work, in exchange for bare necessities or access to the leader or permission to marry.

Women are often sexually exploited in a cult.  They have no right to own their own bodies, to decide when or with whom they will have sex with, or are brainwashed to think that having sex with other cult members or the leader doesn't count when it comes to promiscuity.  They may be forced to marry someone not of their own choosing. Their husband may rule their lives like never before, or the couple will be ordered to not have sex or not have children.

What they tell you BEFORE you give up your family, friends, job, possessions, and MOVE to be with them, and the reality may not match.  But you may, having given up so much, and being idealistic, still decide to give it a try, not knowing you can never own your life again.  (I have to wonder if some of the suicide bombers kill themselves because they see it as a way out!)

Some cults use constant teaching called programming to challenge your normal thought processes.  Some use actual hypnosis, sleep deprivation (keeping you working for days on end without proper sleep), nutritional deprivation (keeping you on a starvation diet, or making you work longer and harder for the reward of a full meal), all of these things making you more and more likely to do things their way and to submit and become part of a hierarchy that is dictated.

When it comes to acts of violence, which you may or may not have been prone to before you joined or were recruited by the cult, your training includes desensitizing you.  (As I understand it the terrorists in Syria even train children to behead beginning with the use of dolls, which of course cannot feel pain or shed blood.)  Because you have learned to think of other people as the Other, not like you, not part of the cult group, even as the enemy, their humanity is in question.  (The Nazi's did this by comparing the Jews to vermin.)

If you try to leave the cult because you realize it is one and that you do not want to be controlled, you may not have any old friends or family left to take you in.  You may be threatened with violence yourself, or be shunned, attacked verbally, or find yourself the target of slander that makes it impossible for you to regain employment.  (This is the testimony of many an ex Scientologist.) Some cult members have found themselves in desperation and decide to make the best of their situation, and years go by before they can leave, often when the leader dies or the group breaks up.

It's best, whenever you encounter a new religion, or version of your religion, in which your personal freedoms and right to determine your own life or fit into a multicultural society, TO NEVER GET INVOLVED IN A CULT IN THE FIRST PLACE.

However, it is a known fact that some people have, though intensive deceptions, including group hypnosis, joined a cult, totally changing over their life, in as little as one long day, or weekend.  Some cults have recruiters looking for their type of person - someone a bit disgruntled with their own life or the state of the world who is idealistic and believes they can make change - but often also someone who is intelligent, educated, or who has special skills and talents - such as an ability with languages, computer programing, or in the case of terrorists, some history of military use of weaponry.

Here is Southern California, there have been and are many cults.  Some of them are storefront preacher-lead cults.  Rarely are they violent.

SLAVIA - A BIG PART OF THE WORLD UNITED? WHERE WOULD HUNGARY FIT? and THE WINTER OLYMPICS IN RUSSIA

This winter I didn't watch the OLYMPICS,  which was staged by Russia, at all.  I did listen to radio news and looked it up on the Internet quite a bit, but I didn't see a single televised performance.

I thought some of the press wasn't fair at all.  So what if one of the flowers didn't open to become a ring?  Wasn't there a similar failure when Canada hosted?  Jokes about hotel rooms missing doorknobs and featuring two toilet seats in the bathrooms, so people who were used to outhouses could upgrade their mutual potty experience were everywhere.  THAT CERTAINLY WASN'T EVERY HOTEL, just evidence of a rush to finish some of the accommodations.

So much focus on what went WRONG when so much went RIGHT.

I thought it was terrific that Putin sat and watched some of the performances and made the scene there.  I thought it was terrific that royalty like Princess Anne of Great Britain and Prince Albert II and his wife Princess Charlene (another person the press should be kinder to) made the scene.  IT WAS TRULY INTERNATIONAL. It was a great opportunity for people from around the world to see another country, as all Olympics are.  This is one of the reasons various cities apply to be chosen as a HOSTING site!

We in the United States still haven't really shaken off memories or impressions from the COLD WAR ERA, but as the days went by, I became more interested and worried about what was happening in the Ukraine.  (I do have a few readers from somewhere in Ukraine and other parts of the Slavic world.)

This morning as I listened to very early morning talk radio I heard that there is speculation that the UKRAINE will split into an east and a west, one part going with Russia, the other part with Europe.

IT SEEMS THERE IS ALWAYS TURMOIL IN THIS PART OF THE WORLD.

Well, I also recently learned about a move to UNITE all Slavic speaking Countries.  I don't know where this would leave Hungary,  I think OUT, though it has historically had many Slavic people as well as German people within changing borders.

Not every person in these countries wants to be part of the EUROPEAN UNION.

MAYBE IT'S A GOOD IDEA?

First, the end of the various Slavic people fighting each other, economic cooperation, and a preservation of culture.

I watched a number of YouTube videos and the idea is also to stop Russia.  Here is a link that is one of many I saw:  SLAVIALAND.ORG

RUSSIA : GERMANY : TURKEY : THE CZECH REPUBLIC : POLAND : READ MAGYAR-AMERICAN : ETHNICITY and 9/11 CELEBRATION

Thank You to new readers for stopping by my blog from these countries!

You know, my blog is about the Hungarian American experience and connection to the motherland of Hungary. But as we all know, due to war and politics, borders in these countries have been redefined many times as have the names of cities and towns which sometimes have three or four different language variations. "Ethnic" populations of Hungarians are in all these countries as are people of various "Ethnic" populations living within the borders of Hungary.

And in the United States people of Hungarian family origins are everywhere, though there are concentrations of Magyar-Americans in places where people who came during the industrial revolution resided.

There's a challenge because just about everyone is proud of (or at least not ashamed) of their ethnicity. WE CAN BE PROUDEST OF HAVING MUTUAL RESPECT for our similarities as well as our differences. I believe in the United States intermarriage has, one relationship at a time, made a big difference in how we think about what makes an American. There is a lot of diversity here. I have one friend who counts 6 different ethnicities in her blood; Irish, Polish, Croation, Hungarian, Slovak, German; in the United States we suspect that everyone has a "wee bit" Irish.

On Sunday I attended one of the many small community 9/11 memorial services in a big city. There were beautifully singing young girls, a bag pipe player, a violinist, and representatives from five different religions from Jewish and Moslem, to Catholic and Christian to New Age speaking, as well as representatives from the fire department and the police. It wasn't a spectacle but it was well attended. Fire department helicopters flew over in formation, the boy scouts carried flags, and the names of the 83 Californians who died in the terrorist attack were read, while 83 white doves were let out to fly around the park.

HELLO TO SERBIA and RUSSIA and ROMANIA and LATVIA

Recently readers from these countries stopped by to MAGYAR-AMERICAN.

And there were also people stopping by from IRAN, INDIA, and MALAYSIA, as well as the UK, AUSTRALIA, and GERMANY.
