HUNGARIAN WOMAN ARE BLUNT IN THEIR ASSESSMENT OF RELATIONSHIP : HUNGARIAN STEREOTYPES

Here goes another stereotype of Hungarian WOMEN...  If you're a Hungarian woman (and this may carry over to you Hungarian-Americans) you waste no words in telling your partner what you do or do not like about the relationship.

Despite this bluntness, you still expect a man to simply know or remember what it is you like or want!  When he does you are satisfied with him. Therefore, if he is not used to this bluntness, even if you are sure to list the good things first  - and more of them - he will fear what it is you have to tell him.  It's implied that once he knows what you don't like he will improve.

What you think of sex with him, for instance.

Hey, at least you spoke up.

This is very modern.

It has nothing to do with how your great-grandmom, grandmom, or mom dealt with men.

Does she also enjoy you being so blunt with her?

Are you kidding?

HUNGARIAN FLOWER LANGUAGE - JUST IN TIME FOR BUYING A BOUQUET - - APRIL SHOWERS BRING MAY FLOWERS

I've been aware that the Victorians (English) had their own language of flowers in which various blooms and colors conveyed emotions in a more romantic and perhaps subtle way than blurting out something better left not obvious.

But what of the HUNGARIANS?

I did a little research on this and if you're Hungarian, or in a relationship with a Hungarian, you definitely do not want to follow another ethnic groups flower language.   Officially this study is called floriography.

Culled from a number of informational web sites, here it is:

***

FUNERALS :  White lilies, roses in white, pink or red shades, and chrysanthemums, especially white, are the flowers to present. Never give "mums" for other occasions.  Red roses mean your love for the person will never end.  White flowers woven into a wreath...

OVERALL : Avoid giving 13 flowers in any bouquet which is considered unlucky. Always give a number that is uneven.  Even numbers of flowers are considered unlucky.

ROMANCE :

Daffodils mean that you want more than friendship.
White carnations tell a person that you consider yourself uncommitted to them. Yellow tulips represent unrequited love.  (Throw those in with some daffodils and you are communicating that you are really hurting without her!)  Yellow roses used to mean jealousy but now mean that you are friends. (Thus yellow roses with white carnations are a way to tell someone you are breaking with them but want to remain friendly.)

TULIPS, the national flower, are almost always good to give in colors, particularly pink, and add a touch of sincerity to your bouquet.  (Mixed in with lilies and the giver is thinking about marrying his love!)

ROSES are also almost always good, especially pink - happy ones.  Red and white roses mixed in a bouquet mean harmony, as in a unified relationship.  But do not give roses for a first date in Hungary.  That's just too serious.

LILACS : White for innocence, purple for the beginnings of love.

SUNFLOWERS :  Always cheery, a good flower to include in a friendly bouquet or as a house warming gift.

DAISIES : Also friendly and good for gift giving.

WILD or FIELD FLOWERS : Happiness: Also friendly and good for gift giving.  Include into this category any flowers that are in orange colors.

PEONIES - the rose without thorns.  An excellent flower to decorate church. Associated with lasting and happy marriage.  Also associated with prosperity.  Thus a perfect flower for romance and weddings.

BABY's BREATH - popular in the United States as a "filler" : don't use it.  Filler should be healthy and green.

KISSING A WOMAN'S HAND WHILE LOOKING IN HER EYES - HUNGARIAN MEN FLIRTING?

One day years ago I went out to lunch with my boss and some people from the office.  My boss was once a refugee from Croatia or Italy - somewhere like that.  At the restaurant his good friend, a Hungarian who had come to the United States as a refugee showed up.  I was introduced and upon hearing my Hungarian surname, the man grabbed my hand, bent his head to kiss it, all the while smiling and looking deeply into my eyes.  I have to admit I thought it was weird.

I was told that this is how Hungarian men do it.

Hey, I thought, Hands can be dirty and smelly.

Someone said, but this avoids the lips!

It's true that I would have considered it entirely inappropriate if this man or any man I was just introduced to anywhere made a dive for my lips with his.

This man made a joke - I wish I could remember it - that gave me the impression this hand kissing could be considered obscene too.

So what I'm wondering is - what's the history of hand kissing?

Is it something men are still doing in Hungary?
If a woman reacts by removing her hand from a man's lips, is he dishonored?

THE FAMOUS LOVE LOCKS OF BUDAPEST - SZECHENYI CHAIN BRIDGE

NEWSWEEK - LOVE LOCKS MAY BE FORBIDDEN BUT...  This article from the 2015 era discusses the love locks of Paris... I understand that due to the collapse of the bridge due to the weight of the locks, they have been removed.  (But the collection is beginning again.)

Did you know that the Szechenyi Chain Bridge is also the scene of lovers padlocking it as a symbol of their forever love? The Chain Bridge was the first permanent stone bride connecting Pest and Buda.

HUNGARIANS ARE MYSTERIOUS : HUNGARIAN / HUNGARIAN-AMERICAN STEREOTYPES

Once they have started pronouncing your Hungarian surname correctly - or close - it's time to tell your friends that it's TRUE  - You ARE Mysterious!

How can you not be mysterious?

Every Hungarian has a mystery to them.  Their origins, their language, their DNA, their sensibility.

You have strong political beliefs - but who knows what you're really thinking?

You like all women/men - but who knows who you really love?

You play chess well - but did you let the other person win - for future strategy?

Who knows what really goes on in your mind?  Not even your mother is sure!

GRADESCHOOL VALENTINES STILL BRING UP MEMORIES OF LITTLE GIRL CRUSHES

I was very lucky to have a mom who scrapbooked greeting cards I received as a child.  These scrapbooks are mostly stored away but the kind of thing that you would want to run out with if you were warned to evacuate your home due to pending mudslide or fire.

Although in my grade school is was not mandatory for every child to give every other child in the class a Valentine, and nor do I think that should be mandated, it was exciting when it came time for the big box covered in wrapping paper with a mail slot in the top to be opened and the Valentine's distributed.

Though only 6 or 7 at the time, I knew there were one or two or three people I hoped I would get a Valentine from.  Oh the art was too cute and so was the humor, but one flipped over the card to see if anything besides a signature had been written.  Even the signature was so important!

These days I tend to think that Valentine's Day, as are many holidays, is overblown with materialism and have to's.  I long for the days when a Valentine was precious and meant something special - that there was more sincerity involved.

Maybe this is because I recently reencountered an adult woman who I've always basically liked, but who I remember as being a bit over the top and at ease with telling people she loves them "very much."  If actions speak louder than words, such effusive gushes of adoration must sub in for the fact that she rarely has time for most people.  She is busy with work, and going out with her small inner circle after work, saving herself for big gatherings where she can encounter a lot of people, do some sharing, and make such declarations.
It's not that she dislikes you or is hiding hatred.  It's just so insincere!

I think overall our society is encouraging us to blur liking someone into loving them.

Liking someone does not require you send them a Valentine!

P.S. I love my dog but am not baking her a Doggie Valentine Cupcake full of liver!

HUNGARIAN/ HUNGARIAN-AMERICAN MEN STEREOTYPES! (FOR THOSE WHO ARE CONSIDERING LOVE AND ROMANCE WITH SUCH A PERSON!)

Just in time for VALENTINE'S DAY, I present to you the stereotypes of HUNGARIAN and HUNGARIAN-AMERICAN MEN. This is just in case you are considering love and romance with such a person!  (Those of you already in the love and romance already know!)

 1) THEY ALL WEAR MUSTACHES, and even spend a lot of time grooming their mustaches.  You should be prepared to be tickled or abraded with the mustache when you kiss him. So you can never lie to anyone and claim you were not making out. Prepare to be abraded - unless he is one to groom the ends into points using wax, in which case, you may find that one of the ends of the mustache goes up into your nose when you make out!

2) THEY ALL READ OR WRITE POETRY as a way of seducing you. Beware the Hungarian or Hungarian-American who shows up at street poetry slams or tries to RAP in the Hungarian language!

You may need a translator, but ask yourself this.  What is the SUBJECT of the POEM?  IS IT ME?

3) ONCE A YEAR IN SPRING THEY FEEL COMPELLED TO SPRINKLE YOU WITH CHEAP PERFUME.  Don't get this cheap perfume confused with the real, expensive perfume you actually want as a gift for Valentines Day or your Birthday, that subtle scent that you use only one drop of, in the crook of your elbow!

4) THE MEN ARE ONLY A COUPLE GENERATIONS FROM WEARING DRESSES.  Do not automatically think of him as a cross-dresser if he shows up in one.

5)  HE'S NOT BI-POLAR it's JUST THAT HIS MOOD GOES UP AND DOWN.  Particularly if you refuse to say you love him frequently. He will be disappointed if the card you give him for Valentine's Day isn't mushy. (This attitude apparently began after the nobility stopped arranging marriages and began to marry for love!)

6) IF HE IS THE ONE PURSUING YOU, HE REALLY MIGHT CONSIDER SUICIDE if your romance DOESN'T TURN INTO TRUE LOVE AND MARRIAGE!  (Buy him one of those sun lamps sold to combat seasonal depression. Remember the lost homeland of the Hungarians must have been a sunny place and now they are forced to live in the cold, damp, foggy, and dark.)  (You Vixens out there should know that a Hungarian man will rarely turn down a woman who is after him, but he may not ask her out!)

7) YOU GET TO DOMINATE HIM IN THE HOME, just make a show of rushing around to serve him beer when his friends show up to watch soccer or football!  Also, if he decides to sit under a tree with some Slovak men to watch the clouds in the sky and let the women do all the work, remember matriarchy!

8) LET HIS MOTHER SHOW YOU HOW TO COOK HIS FAVORITE RECIPE, but don't actually ever try to make that meal for him when the two of you are home alone, until she is dead.  (Never ever make a show of showing up his mother as a cook!  You will never ever get that stuffed cabbage in the slow cooker recipe right!)

9) HE MAY HAVE ADVENTURES BUT HE ALWAYS MARRIES THE HOME TOWN GIRL!
(Even if she becomes the town spinster while waiting.)  Seriously good news, it just takes going to the same school to be a home town girl!

10)  NOBODY ACTUALLY HAS SEX TO HAVE BABIES.  Where do you think STORKS come from?  Poland? WHY DO YOU THINK THERE ARE STORKS NESTING ON HUNGARIAN CHIMNEYS?   All that public passion is just for show, to fool people.

ARE YOU LAUGHING YET?
