BUKKABRANY VILLAGE MUMMIFIED FOREST : BUKK NATIONAL PARK : WONDERFUL PLACES IN HUNGARY #18

Bukki Nemzeti Park 

In 2007 in the village of Bukkabrany, archaeologists discovered that beneath the ground at 60 meters (around 200 feet) down the trunks of swamp cypress trees.  These have been dug out and are on display at the visitors center of Bukk National Park.

According to this article that appeared via Rueters the trees were living at a time when the Carpathian basin was a fresh water lake.

MY DOG IS NOW A FRAGILE LITTLE OLD LADY - HEAT SICKNESS IN DOGS

The fires raging in California have thrown ash and particulates into the air.  The heat wave hit - and we didn't have the worst of it.  While other places in Southern California went up to 112 - 115- 120, we were at about 93.  I took my dog outside for about five minutes.  It was "you can fry an egg on the hood of your car" time.  I regretted it.  My dog did not look good.  She looked disoriented.  The prior week she had thrown up.  The first time a tinge of blood.  A few hours later a profuse amount of clear what looked like saliva with a few streaks of white.  It occurred to me that she had never thrown up like this before.  It occurred to me I had done the same during a bout with food poisoning.  It was clear to me that she had probably eaten something outside.  I try to keep the floors clean.  Unlike some other dogs, she is not adventurous about fruit.  However, she has been known to be attracted to another dog's poop.  Then, the next morning, to my complete upset, she tried to waken me by dancing all over my body, and when I didn't wake in time, she had diarrhea. It was stinky and all over some paperwork I had left on my bed.  I cleaned it up.  I had to throw away some applications I hadn't finished.  I took her outside.  Many times.  When I got home she had made a big poop on the living room floor.

My dog has only been sick 1 -2 - maybe 3 times in all the years I've had her.  She almost never poops in the house.  I knew that she had just not made it outside in time.  I cleaned it up.

The heat wave hit and she was panting.  She was panting and her tongue did not look right.  I looked a little purple and curled.  She seemed disoriented.  I got on the computer and researched.  She had all 10 signs of heat exhaustion.  The warning was it could cause internal organ damage and kill a dog quick.  She was in trouble.  Quickly I got her in the tub and proceeded to shampoo her with mildly warm - luke- warm water.  (You can also wrap a dog in wet towels - do not use ice.)  She slept.  Finally her breathing seemed deep instead of shallow.  The instructions said not to force a dog to drink water.  For the first time I took spoons full of water and dropped in on her lips and into her mouth and she lapped it.

Thoughts were going through my head - she's going to die.  She is dying.  This is it.

I'm glad to report we are almost back to normal and maybe it's because the sky is so dense with smoke that the sun has been blocked and the temperature is way down.  She is eating slowly.  She is pooping normally.  She is drinking lots of water.  She is barking at the cat she puts up with and the dog who is always after her food.  She is walking - slower than ever - a little limpy - but still interested in life. Other people are noticing she is old.  I can't deny it.  A friend called her "A FRAGILE LITTLE OLD LADY."  I had to agree.

MAKE TIMELINES FOR EACH OF YOUR ANCESTORS - WHAT WAS THE EFFECT OF PANDEMICS? STRATEGY #10

MAKE TIMELINES FOR EACH OF YOUR ANCESTORS -  WHAT WAS THE EFFECT OF PANDEMICS?  STRATEGY #10

I'm a believer in doing TIME LINES for each individual on your chart. Start a page when you find a record of the birth/baptism and add to it as you discover the birth of siblings, the death of parent's, remarriages and so on.  It helps to understand their individual lives.

The timeline begins with Birth and Baptism.

It can include First Holy Communion, or Confirmation, the Conversion to another religion.

It can include Military Service.

Marriage, and the birth of siblings and children that change the size of the family, and their Deaths.

The Remarriages, and thus the Step Parenthood.

Education.

Travel to another country - emigration or immigration.  What was their motivation?
Ship records - the name of the ship - what it looked like - what their voyage was probably like.
Naturalization Records - always great to have.  If you're just starting your genealogy for Industrial Era Immigration, the World War I draft registration (which included men who were not yet citizens) often has details such as the town or village and country the man left.

You also want to include:

Important times in History they lived through. Locally and in the larger world.

Do some research around these events.

For instance, were your family members involved in any Uprisings or Military Action, any Politics? 

Were they refugees?  Were they relocated?  Did they flee?

Sometimes this is a way of weaving family oral histories into your research and proof the oral histories.

As you add to the timeline, you start to get a feel for your ancestor's life. This is a much richer genealogy for her than charts that seem to only be about a person's direct genetic lines. You may also notice how long they lived, what they died of, and of any genetic patterns emerge.

Earlier I mentioned that if you are Hungarian or Hungarian American, then your ancestors managed to reproduce despite the population being decimated by invaders who killed off much of the population repeatedly.  THEY MAY ALSO HAVE BEEN SURVIVORS OF EPIDEMICS!

For instance, in about 1831/1832 I started finding a large number of illegitimate births in a particular small town.  Knowing that this was taboo, often resulting in a lowered status at a time when status was important and the way communities were organized, and also often resulted in higher rates of death for the children of a single mother, I wondered what had happened? Had the women been raped? Of course I can't know if they were or not - maybe I tripped across a town where people took to the woods and had an orgy - but then I learned that about this time CHOLERA was making its way through Europe and it was so frightening that a person could take ill suddenly in the morning and be dead by afternoon, having been perfectly healthy. Their vomiting was so intense that victims turned blue and then they dehydrated seriously causing organ failure. My suspicion is that there was so much death, so many graves being dug and so many funerals, all the while not knowing if you were next, so much fear, that many people responded to an instinct for life and had sex.

By the way, the tradition in Hungary is that BAPTISMALS and FUNERALS were for immediate family but WEDDINGS were for the village.

HISTORY CHANNEL ON CHOLERA PANDEMICS.

I read this on one site: The Great Plague of 1738 was an outbreak of the BUBONIC PLAGUE between 1738- 1740 that affected areas in the modern nations of Romania, Hungary, Ukraine, Serbia, Croatia, and Austria.  On another, particular to Great Britain and Plague, well it turns out that decimation of populations actually relaxed class barriers to marriage.

Include the Pandemics on your timeline even if your ancestor lived through them!

Also of great interest to me as we face climate change is 1816 THE YEAR WITHOUT A SUMMER. The sun didn't make it through thick volcanic ash clouds around the world (including the United States) and there was crop failures, starvation, people moving to warmer locations.  The people did not understand what was happening and some took it to be End Times.  FARMERS ALMANAC 1816 YEAR WITHOUT SUN

TALKING ABOUT THE WEATHER IS NO LONGER A SAFE SUBJECT

Seems to me my dad told me more than once to "talk about the weather."  

The idea was to avoid politics or religion. Of course doing so was avoidance of expressing opinions.  In the work place and among people you didn't know - and some you did - the weather was a safe subject.

But now the weather is controversial.  

The fact that hard rains have blown out your umbrella, that the heat is roasting you as though you were a bald chicken, or that the snow and cold is unexpectedly fierce (like in Chicago or Milwaukee recently), or that the icebergs are melting all over the globe brings up Global Warming (Liberal), Earth Changes (Middle of the Road), Global Cooling (Controversial ice age theories), and might be avoided.  Depending on which theory you most believe, you may be discovered to be a Republican or a Democrat or even a "Socialist."

UNITED NATIONS CLIMATE SUMMIT - SEPTEMBER 2019

It's my feeling that eventually there will be great population shifts that might change the borders of countries in coming years.  I read that the North Pole (magnetic) has shifted dramatically unexpectedly (some shift was expected) and I wondered if this had something to do with the deep freeze.    Lots of snow can lead to flooding.

FIRES, HELLHOUNDS, and the NEW TOO-HOT REALITY.

We are in a bowl of heat, ash, and fire...

Thousands of acres of forested and scrub hillsides have been burned to the ground, many are still burning.  There have been red skys, blazing suns, ash on roofs and the hoods of cars parked outdoors, ash on the leaves of plants, and smells that would be comforting if only the wood burning was is the fireplace on a cold winter night...

No doubt GLOBAL WARMING has caused the fires.  You know this but here's what happens.  Plant life unable to get enough water to live dies, and so do ecosystems such as insects and creatures that feed on insects.

One morning as I and my neighbors walked our dogs we saw BLOODY PAWPRINTS  and they were HUGE.  Some of us tried to estimate how big the dog had to be and where they started and ended, following them a quarter of a mile on the cement.  The animal had certainly been wounded.  One person said "That has to be a human hand."  Another said, "I think a huge raccoon - look at the nails."  Another determined that it was indeed one paw and that the animal had tried to get into his yard.  We decided that some poor big dog that was let out at night to do it's business might have gotten into a close-by construction site and injured itself.  Someone else thought it had caught a foot in a trap.  As neighbors up and down the street began to speculate, we decided to call these prints - which still exist and prove the injured animal may have been in pain and confused about where to go or what to do next in the middle of the night might be a HELLHOUND. Perhaps if we were living closer to the mountains we might think of this dog as a coyote. 

There are coyotes in Southern California and sometimes you see one from the freeway.  A friend who took in a huge German Shepard stray dog once considered that her female might have mated with one of them. 

When you live up against mountains in Southern California, mountains such as the Santa Monica Chain, or the Sierra Madre, the Angeles Crest Forest,  even if you're in a suburb that's citified, you have to keep watch on your pet dogs and cats and other creatures because a coyote would gladly have your pet for food.  In some of these suburbs there signs up on trees and telephone polls with pictures of these "lost" pets on them and nobody wants to admit it but they probably got eaten.  A bad way for your fluffy loved one to die.

I'm about ready to take some soapy bleach water and a scrub brush to the sidewalks.  The blood smell, though old now, is still attracting pet dogs to sniff and follow.

But if seeing a coyote in neighborhoods up against the mountains, or following the concrete Los Angeles River isn't uncommon, why would such a large creature come all the way to where we live?

The answer is the fires and food.

Fleeing animals taking their chances or simply displaced from their natural surroundings where they are part of a group, have hiding places to sleep, and so on have been ruined.

We see no end, even if it begins to rain because the soil needs to be saturated with water.  However, if it does rain this winter, there will be tremendous wild flower displays in the spring since these always compete for water and space with the larger scrub brush and trees.

Meanwhile, my dog and me have uncharacteristically been running the air-conditioning, but set at 86 degrees indoors.  Since the air has been so polluted that the visibility of the mountains has been cloaked, it has become difficult to breath.  We have both been laying about, me in my thinnest cottons.  I cut her hair back and started giving her water dips to keep her cool.

MALIBU - THE SANTA MONICA MOUNTAINS - A HEAT WAVE HITS SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA - IT'S 88 DEGREES TODAY!

Sadly, the last few days have been unseasonably hot - very much so.  While parts of the United States of America have more freezing weather, in the last couple months we've had only two significant rainfalls, which brought a "normal" amount of rain, but have no effect on the drought here in California. 

There's a construction site down the street, dug down low for a parking garage, and it's clear that we are living on a deep bend of sand, which once must have been under the ocean.  After the last rain you could see wetness saturated the sand about three feet.  It only stopped construction a couple days and then it dried up and they went ahead and poured cement.  However cement and tarmac roadways, driveways, and construction prevent rain from soaking in.  Instead it makes its way into the Santa Monica Bay, which is very polluted.

Hiking in the Santa Monica Mountain chain, which barely qualifies as a Mountain chain by the way because much of is simply not high enough, you can see more evidence of dramatic earth changes in the past, millions of years ago they say.  Along one trail there are on the top of the mountain the equivalent of undersea scoop outs that are still full of sand.  When it rains sometimes beach quartz and petrified shells that have been in place for ages and were once part of the COASTAL BEACHES are exposed.   Something - a massive earth quake, comet hit, or perhaps volcanoes out at sea or maybe even "polar shift" are responsible for throwing beaches thousands of feet and making these mountains.

There are only two mountain chains in the world that go east to west rather than north to south.  These Santa Monica Mountains and the other chain are the Carpathians of Poland, Slovakia, and Hungary.

My concern is not just about water for drinking, cooking, washing, and personal bathing, which is in short supply for the farmers in less citified areas of this massive state of California, resulting in ever higher prices for fruits and vegetables but that the food chain is also effected.

Case in point, the thermostat went up to 88 and insects started coming into the house looking for water.  This means I have to start exterminating, something that I never had to do before the heat wave.  As the earth dries up and the bugs start dying, well so it follows that birds will starve, and so it goes.

Because of the construction site, which is on what had been a long vacant lot, every morning we smell skunk.  In the middle of the night a possum and a cat seem to be getting into a fight for turf in the back yard.  There was a raccoon in our garbage cans.  I figure they have been displaced from the long vacant lot. 

The raccoon was in our cans in the morning light and was bigger than my dog!  My dog was barking, I looked out and saw no human beings, so I opened the door and there was the raccoon.

So do I hope for more rain?

Yes!

A NEW YEAR OF EARTH CHANGES

Saint Louis, Missouri, flooded enough to stop transportation,  The North Of England - flooded.  (Prince Charles with his long time concern for the environment is truly the perfect person to be the next King!) Tornados touching down in unprecedented numbers.  Earth changes, no doubt.  Global Warming Summit in Paris.   Is this really something we can stop now by altering our life styles so that we no longer pollute?  (I think it would take more than recycling, and shutting down factories particularly in China, but also less use of air travel...)  Al Gore was right.  Al Gore was right.

In the wee hours I woke up and turned on the radio, a station which featured psychic predictions for the future.  In the morning I wake up again, check my weather ap and see that the experts are predicting a swath of storms "NON EL NINO RELATED" that will hit my area this week.  I took down the Christmas lights that I had planned to keep on until January 6th, in advance of these storms thinking the wet weather and electricity could be dangerous.

My dog is wearing sweaters and I've taken to using a space heater in one room - the bedroom, which I'm using 90% of the time now.  The gas wall heater is too expensive to use and so old it has no thermostat and though it can eat up the humidity when it's on, most of the heat goes out the windows. The electric bill will rise, as will the gas bill, but not enough to consider the expense of double pane windows, water heater wraps, and all the rest. 

Not too long ago, during one of the hottest summers I've ever experienced, so sick of the heat, I vowed that I would not complain of the cold or the wet.  I'm actually lucky because I'm not dealing at all with freezing rain, sleet, ice or snow and even when it goes to freezing at night I can cover up my plants outside.

I'm limited in what I can do but I do it.  I have cut back my water use especially.  I recycle not only bottles and cans but give away clothes and other things that someone else can get use out of.  I generate so little garbage that my can doesn't have to go out to the street more than once a month.  I think "if everyone would do just a little more towards this effort."  But, despite their being constant warnings - and rules - and laws - about water usage in my area, I still have a neighbor who waters excessively. Everyone on the street is angry at him but so far he has not been busted by the authorities and has not gotten any fines.

Now, anticipating the rain, I'm more worried than ever that it will be excessive and that there will be flooding in my area, which was not designed to cope with too much rain at any one time.  There is a construction site down the street that is dug out and I hope any flooding will go down into the pit instead of down the street and into the yards!

SAINT NICK - a ROLE MODEL OF GENEROSITY and EMPATHY and the SOULLESS SAN BERNARDINO TERRORISTS

Old Saint Nick, also known as Saint Nicklaus, and now, in the Western World as Santa Claus, was, like our present Pope Francis, who has given out sleeping bags to the homeless in Rome, Italy, personally, a person of action who role modeled generosity and empathy by bringing gifts to the poor. Some say it started with the secret gift of three gold coins to some poor children.  Today there is so much poverty around the world, it's almost impossible to imagine any immediate answer to the suffering, which includes starvation of children born to die.  I know I have it good here in the United States.

Walking my dog, I often encounter a woman who is sweet and kind and always begging.  To my amazement she walked into a corner store that mostly sells liquor and asked a customer to give her $20 so that she could buy a Christmas tree.  To my amazement this stranger gave her $10 towards her purchase.  I told her where artificial trees were being sold at a good price, but she explained she was trying to raise $40 for a real tree, and then more money for lights and decorations, because she wanted to have a REAL CHRISTMAS.  Well, one can have a REAL CHRISTMAS without a tree and lights and decorations, but I found it interesting what I was witnessing.

I don't want to loose my Christmas spirit of generosity and empathy, but I'm struggling to maintain a  Christmassy attitude because the San Bernardino terrorist attacks seem to be EVEN MORE SENSELESS than the killings in PARIS.  You see, these terrorists, whatever their religion, HAVE NO EMPATHY OR GENEROSITY OF SPIRIT. 

They do not care about ending the lives of the innocent or making children orphans.  They wish to spread fear and hatred, not love, understanding, tolerance, or kindness.  There is no love left inside them, not even (in this case) for their own six month old child.  They have not even thought about the KIND OF WORLD they are trying to create in which that child/children will have to live.  They are establishing a TERRORIST STATE and it is a state in which the violence is so extreme  (killing of babies born disabled - teaching children to chop off heads using dummies)  that I believe it is devoid of ANY SPIRITUALITY whatsoever.

It's as if they had their very souls plucked out by demons.

After listening to radio reportage for hours and reading, again, many articles that report on the terrorists in PARIS, I learned that the man who lead the group had BEEN IN HUNGARY and RECRUITED TERRORIST HELP-MATES THERE, that these men had REFUSED TO REGISTER LAWFULLY WITHIN HUNGRY.

I realized that some of the Paris and the husband-wife couple San Bernardino terrorists seem to fall into the "he/she was such a nice, quiet person," category. 

I looked at the pictures of this EVIL COUPLE that were available.  At once I saw how dead, how zombie-like and hypnotized the eyes of the male shooter were.  The female, not so much.  Today the news is that it was the female who shot first, who was radicalized first, and that various Muslim organizations are distancing themselves from terrorism - or at least these two - both here and in other countries such as Pakistan.  She was so "shy" that many people never saw her face or heard her speak, as she would not speak to men other than her husband but she was deadly.  Is this Muslim or is this mentally ill?

Why are we even still using the term "radicalized" when something more and worse is happening?

Why is there civil war in Syria, why is the whole MIDDLE EAST a HELL ON EARTH?  Why is the CRADLE OF CIVILIZATION the most barbaric part of the world?

So here I am, all ready to go to a Christmas concert at the local community college where a friend of mine is playing the trumpet, wearing a fancy purple evening jacket, and hoping that at least for a while, I can shut the terror out of my mind, reattach to my own spirit of Christmas, and continue to be generous and empathic.

MY BUTTERFLY GARDEN IS NOT GROWING!

Over the last couple weeks I've had to accept it.  My butterfly garden that I blogged about a few weeks ago is simply not growing!  I ordered the seeds from a MONARCH BUTTERFLY CONSERVANCY PROJECT, set the seeds out in new soil and in my window and watered them carefully but just a couple of them took.  I carefully planted those seeds out of doors a couple weeks later, and I even put the ones that hadn't sprouted in soil outdoors as well.  I thought if the watering or light or heat was wrong in the house they would have a second chance, but no.

I GUESS I GOT SOME DUD SEEDS!

What now?

One day when I was walking down the street I came across some marigolds that had gone to seed, pulled some of the dry buds, and planted some of those.  THEY SPROUTED RIGHT UP!

So right now I have six giant marigolds that are growing.

All the tiny seeds that immediately sprouted indoors died once transplanted!

What happened to my "GREEN THUMB?"

or did I do everything right in the wrong weather?
