SHOES RIVER MOMUMENT : INTERNATIONAL HOLOCAUST MEMORIAL DAY IS JANUARY 27th EACH YEAR BUT HUNGARY HAS IT'S OWN DAY : WONDERFUL PLACES IN HUNGARY #28

YAD VASHEM : SHOES ON THE DANUBE PROMINADE BUDAPEST HOLOCAUST MEMORIAL

Excerpt: If you look more closely, you see that the shoes are rusted, made or iron and set into the concrete of the embankment.  They are a memorial and a monument to the Hungarian Jews who, in the winter of 1944-1945, were shot on the banks of the Danube River by members of the Arrow Cross Party. Known as "The Shoes on the Danube Promenade:, the memorial was conceptualized by film director Can Togay, and was created by Today, together with the sculptor Gyula Pauer. It was installed on the Pest bank of the Danube River in Budapest in 2005. At three separate places on the memorial, cast iron signs read in Hungarian, English, and Hebrew: "To the memory of victims shot into the Danube by Arrow Cross militiamen in 1944-1945."

HUNTING ACROSS THE DANUBE : MAGYAR AMERICAN BOOK REVIEW

author: Peter Lewis Horn

First, I admit that I have not read this book word for word as I usually do, that I scanned it looking for locations I'd know from a map or genealogy search.  I am not a hunter.  If I had to kill an animal myself in order to eat I'd probably do so in the insanity of starvation. Then I would feel myself to be an animal as well. But I'm no radical vegan. I'm convinced my personal body needs meat due to a foray into food-combining vegetarianism that left me protein starved. I say this because those of you who are hunters - of wild boar, wolf, pheasant, stag, roebuck, mountain bear, and the CAPERCAILLE OFTHECARPATHIANS (What's that?!) - those of you who go after the few beast who've managed to live to an enormous old age - those of you into Couples Hunts, Ladies Hunts, THE KING'S SHOOT - who perhaps hunt in places where killing for sport is seen as a necessary culling of the limited wilderness - Those of you who go to Romania, Hungary and Transylvania, Lake Balaton - WILL GET INTO THIS BOOK!

It has blow by blow accounts of mud, rain, the obstacles of climbing and tracking, what takes cunning, as well as photo ops with dead animals and trophy racks.

Hint: Sheepherders will rat out a bear.

It's not my scene but maybe you'll want to read this book to self discover if it's yours.

THE DANUBE CARRIES THE HISTORY OF EUROPE - JACQUES COUSTEAU ADVENTURE CIRCA 1990-1992

Watching

1) The Curtain Rises - the old abbeys and castles, and new dams and industry, and the timeless ECOSYSTEM of the river THAT CARRIES THE HISTORY OF EUROPE.

2) Charlemagne's Dream to link the Rhine and the Danube by a canal which now exists and creates also a passage from the North to the Black Sea.

3) The Rivers Cries Out...  The royal stag and the Carpathian bear, the Danube and it's tributaries.

4) Rivalries - nuclear and industrial pollution, fished out waters, rusted out vessels and the horrors of war.

I admit to being distracted badly while trying to watch this film, and also having a sense that the information was valuable but needed an update. But what surprised me was that it turned into a travelogue about the land - and the history - and wasn't all about what was under the water.

As I watched I also wondered about the flooding that has occurred in recent years in Europe.  I thought about fresh water - drinking and farming water - shortages.  Earth changes and drought.

FLOODING IN SERBIA AND CROATIA AND BOZNIA HERZEGOVINA : MY HEART BREAKS FOR THE PEOPLE

RECORD FLOODS FORCING MORE EVACUATIONS : WALL STREET JOURNAL BLOG

“Much of Bosnia and Herzegovina, eastern Croatia and Serbia are underwater with an imminent threat of spillover into the neighboring countries,” the bank said, adding it would consider increasing its investment program for the Balkans beyond the €1.2 billion ($1.64 billion) originally planned for this year."

*****
35,000 people and counting have left behind their pets, livestock, valuable, homes, cars... the Balkans have historically been at war and now more people are effected than in the wars...  It is time to pull together, no matter what.

The experience of loss here is so profound, I ask myself what are these people going to do?

If there is money to rebuild, then they must consider the Climate Changes that seem to be wrecking havoc with the weather all over the world and they must build high up.  If natural features of geography do not allow this, then artificial mounds must be build.

THE DANUBE FLOODS : EARTH CHANGES?

DANUBE FLOODING EFFECTS 10 NATIONS article

"Winding 2,850 kilometers (1,777 miles) across 10 nations, the Danube is the second-longest river on the continent, making its way from Germany's Black Forest to the Black Sea bordering Romania and Ukraine. Only the Volga in Russia is longer."

EUROPEAN DEEP FREEZE : HUNGARY CLOSES THE DANUBE

"Other countries along the Danube, including Austria, Croatia, Serbia, and Bulgaria, had already suspended river traffic because of the freeze.

The 2,860-kilometre (1,780-mile) river, which flows through 10 countries and is vital for transport, power, irrigation, industry and fishing, was nearly wholly blocked from Austria to its mouth on the Black Sea.

In Hungary, 60 to 70 percent of the river was frozen, with only ice-breakers remaining in action, especially in the south of the country, officials said."
The full AP Press article and pictures is linked.

Last year the Deep Freeze covered the United States of America. Estimates are that a couple billion dollars in loss was experienced. This year the weather in New York isn't that much different than the weather in Los Angeles. All around the United States people who were bundled up last year are out playing sports in shorts! (To you Hungarians out there - Really! So you see, there is hope.)

This year it's Europe and other parts of the world experiencing the Deep Freeze. I'm hearing radio news reports that hundreds in Europe have died. Frankly, this does not sound like Global Warming to me. It sounds like a new Ice Age! Earth changes certainly, though I honestly don't know how much is natural cycles or man-made pollution causing the hole in the Ozone layer! I'm concerned but helpless. Like you I might be able to stay out of the sun a bit more, take my walks early in the morning; I don't even think the chemicals in sun screens should be put on the skin!

RED SLUDGE MAKES IT TO THE DANUBE in HUNGARY - BREAKING NEWS

"The concentration of TOXIC HEAVY METALS  where Hungary's massive red sludge spill entered the Danube has dropped to the level allowed in drinking water, authorities said Friday, easing fears that Europe's second longest river would be significantly polluted.

Monday's reservoir break at an ALUNIMA PLANT  dumped up to 700,000 cubic meters (184 million gallons) of sludge onto three villages, government officials said, not much less in a few hours than the 200 million gallons the blown-out BP oil well gushed into the Gulf of Mexico over several months."
