A PATHE AMSTERDAM FILM PRESERVED : SCENES FROM HUNGARY 1926 BETWEEN THE WORLD WARS : HONGARIJE

There are seven parts to this film...  Mezokovesd, dancing, marriage in Debrecen, horses in Hortobagy, Kosice, and scenes in the Carpathian Mountains.  Those are the mountains which include the recently mentioned Dukla Pass, so important to the wine trade - Galicia into Hungary.

WILD CARPATHIA SERIES - CHARLIE OTTLEY - FASCINATING

Here's the first in the series. Found this so fascinating. Bears - Wolves - Medieval settlements - and covering an expanse as large as Great Britain.

If you like it, you can find the rest of the series on YouTube (until I get around to posting it all!)

MALIBU - THE SANTA MONICA MOUNTAINS - A HEAT WAVE HITS SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA - IT'S 88 DEGREES TODAY!

Sadly, the last few days have been unseasonably hot - very much so.  While parts of the United States of America have more freezing weather, in the last couple months we've had only two significant rainfalls, which brought a "normal" amount of rain, but have no effect on the drought here in California.

There's a construction site down the street, dug down low for a parking garage, and it's clear that we are living on a deep bend of sand, which once must have been under the ocean.  After the last rain you could see wetness saturated the sand about three feet.  It only stopped construction a couple days and then it dried up and they went ahead and poured cement.  However cement and tarmac roadways, driveways, and construction prevent rain from soaking in.  Instead it makes its way into the Santa Monica Bay, which is very polluted.

Hiking in the Santa Monica Mountain chain, which barely qualifies as a Mountain chain by the way because much of is simply not high enough, you can see more evidence of dramatic earth changes in the past, millions of years ago they say.  Along one trail there are on the top of the mountain the equivalent of undersea scoop outs that are still full of sand.  When it rains sometimes beach quartz and petrified shells that have been in place for ages and were once part of the COASTAL BEACHES are exposed.   Something - a massive earth quake, comet hit, or perhaps volcanoes out at sea or maybe even "polar shift" are responsible for throwing beaches thousands of feet and making these mountains.

There are only two mountain chains in the world that go east to west rather than north to south.  These Santa Monica Mountains and the other chain are the Carpathians of Poland, Slovakia, and Hungary.

My concern is not just about water for drinking, cooking, washing, and personal bathing, which is in short supply for the farmers in less citified areas of this massive state of California, resulting in ever higher prices for fruits and vegetables but that the food chain is also effected.

Case in point, the thermostat went up to 88 and insects started coming into the house looking for water.  This means I have to start exterminating, something that I never had to do before the heat wave.  As the earth dries up and the bugs start dying, well so it follows that birds will starve, and so it goes.

Because of the construction site, which is on what had been a long vacant lot, every morning we smell skunk.  In the middle of the night a possum and a cat seem to be getting into a fight for turf in the back yard.  There was a raccoon in our garbage cans.  I figure they have been displaced from the long vacant lot.

The raccoon was in our cans in the morning light and was bigger than my dog!  My dog was barking, I looked out and saw no human beings, so I opened the door and there was the raccoon.

So do I hope for more rain?

Yes!

SLOVAKIA GENEALOGY RESOURCES : A GREAT WEB SITE FOR GENEALOGISTS WORKING ON TERRITORY PRESENTLY CALLED SLOVAKIA

IABSI - SLOVAKIA GENEALOGY RESOURCES

FROM THE SITE: "My geographic focus is on Eastern Slovakia (Slovak Republic) / formerly Czechoslovakia / formerly Upper Hungary.  Primary research areas include the peoples and lands in the Carpathian mountains and immediate borderlands of Southern Poland (Galicia) and Western Ukraine (Carpatho-Rus).  As Slovakia was a component of pre-1918 Hungary, much information about "old Hungary" is contained herein and will be useful for any pre-1918 Hungary research."

This sight is a great place to look for small settlements in relationship to larger ones so that you can mine the 1869 and other Hungarian Census (which in the LDS catalogue is under Slovakia). The idea is to find that settlement's municipality first.

Apparently the full census of all the counties of 1969 Hungary are not filmed and/or digitalized to be used on databases or the Internet.  However the 1869 census can be very important in your research because the SURNAMES are given (including the maiden surname of wives different from their husbands), birth years, occupations, and a list of occupants of a dwelling including grandparents, boarders, farm help, and so on.
I have to admit my own research is stuck here.  I'm looking for a male who says on his naturalization that he was born in 1847 but who on census and marriage records seems to be taking a few years off his age.  So he was born say anywhere from 1847 to 1850.  (Though it was common for 40ish widowers to marry town "spinsters" (women not married by say, 22) he seemed rather determined to be only 38 when he married a second time.

I looked to find his village on this site and it was identified as in the Bodrogkoz municipality.  However, using FamilySearch, there were only about 43 images counting maybe about 12 family groups, none who had his surname or any other surname I associate with the family.  Which means that he might have been born in the area about 20-22 years earlier but there is no sign of them right there.  Maybe another village in this same county?

Further I think, based on a deep analysis of house numbers in the small town in which he lives the rest of his life until coming to the U.S., that he did not get to that town until about the same time, 1869.  In 1869 another family is living in the house and I don't see any relationship with them.   He could be there living in but there is no record of him until his first marriage on church records. It's as if he moved to begin working as an adult in another town just when the census was happening...

This one takes patience, travel, synchronicities, or acceptance of a brick wall.

YEAR OF THE HORSE PARADE - CHINESE ASTROLOGY - AND THE DNA OF HUNGARIAN HORSES!

The Year of the Horse is starting NOW!  I attended a parade that featured a few terrific looking horses as part of the festivities.  I wondered.  When did the ancient Hungarians get horses?  I believe they came into Hungary with the People, but as you know, Hungarians are a mystery...

I found this link to DIENEKES ANTHROPOLOGY BLOG which is from 2009 and answers the question using DNA evidence.

October 03, 2009  THE ARTICLE

Avar and Hungarian horses were different:

Genetica. 2009 Sep 30. [Epub ahead of print]

Mitochondrial sequence variation in ancient horses from the Carpathian Basin and possible modern relatives.

Priskin K, Szabó K, Tömöry G, Bogácsi-Szabó E, Csányi B, Eördögh R, Downes CS, Raskó I.

Movements of human populations leave their traces in the genetic makeup of the areas affected; the same applies to the horses that move with their owners This study is concerned with the mitochondrial control region genotypes of 31 archaeological horse remains, excavated from pre-conquest Avar and post-conquest Hungarian burial sites in the Carpathian Basin dating from the sixth to the tenth century. To investigate relationships to other ancient and recent breeds, modern Hucul and Akhal Teke samples were also collected, and mtDNA control region (CR) sequences from 76 breeds representing 921 individual specimens were combined with our sequence data. Phylogenetic relationships among horse mtDNA CR haplotypes were estimated using both genetic distance and the non-dichotomous network method. Both methods indicated a separation between horses of the Avars and the Hungarians. Our results show that the ethnic changes induced by the Hungarian Conquest were accompanied by a corresponding change in the stables of the Carpathian Basin...."
