LAPL ORG EVENTS EXHIBITS : ALTA HUMAN ATLAS running through April 27, 2025.

Excerpt: Alta is a social-impact art project that showcases 100 extraordinary individuals creating positive change across Los Angeles County. Each participant is represented through photographic portraits, ancestral DNA, and interviews that reveal how their lives intersect with the region—past, present, and future—creating a legacy work that documents and conserves a deeper narrative for generations to come about the city, its people, and its communities.

Each of them will tell you some of their stories if you download the free, interactive App. Storytelling is a powerful tool for preserving historical perspectives, and can often offer a more nuanced understanding of our complicated past. In a sprawling metropolis like Los Angeles, storytelling can also emerge as a potent tool to bridge divides, cultivating a sense of belonging that can transcend cultural, ethnic, and socio-economic differences.

I was able to see this exhibit and spend some time with it.  Each individual was photographed and some were selected to be presented on the wall - along with their DNA results - and some were in books to look through. I was delighted to note that - unexpectedly - some of these people had MAGYAR DNA and it was listed as MAGYAR rather than HUNGARIAN.

It was quite interesting!

ADMIT YOU'RE HUNGARIAN AMERICAN and OTHERS WILL TOO

I discovered recently that when I say I come from a Hungarian heritage, people I've just met say they are too.  Often of a mixed European heritage here in the United States, I wonder if others have looked into that part of them that comes from an ancestor who came here with a Hungarian identity.  I've learned so much I didn't know by researching and writing this blog and I hope what I have to share here will help you better know Hungary - then and now - and Hungarian culture.  I keep reading around DNA, tribal heritage.

Like everyone, the holidays distract me from perusing my genealogy and family history writing and I have just so much more to do!  In 2019 I started following lines that go back into what is now Slovakia and also seeing some Slovak or Czech surnames appearing in what was once and is now Hungary. I know that eventually, perhaps even soon, every line I explore will come to a dead end.  If I can link to even one family on the Maria Theresa census I will be happy.  There is that potential with certain surnames I'm researching.

ANCESTRY.COM HUNGARIAN RECORDS THAT ARE USELESS IF YOU'RE CHRISTIAN

I took the time to check ANCESTRY.COM for Hungarian records to see if some of the most common surnames in Hungary would come up... When they did not and I saw that Ancestry.com was crediting Jewishgen as the source, I realized what was happening here. 

I tried HUNGARY ALL CITIZEN CENSUS  1869.   WHAT AN TOTALLY MISLEADING TITLE!  Source JewishGen?!  It's clear that this TITLE SHOULD BE CHANGED TO "JEWS OUR JEWISH VOLUNTEERS DECIDED TO INDEX."

I also tried HUNGARY ASSORTED CENSUS RECORDS 1781-1850

AGAIN THE COMMON HUNGARIAN SURNAMES DID NOT COME UP.

I hate when a database is called "Assorted." THIS SHOULD BE RETITLED TO "JEWS ON THE CENSUS RECORDS THAT OUR JEWISH VOLUNTEERS DECIDED TO TRANSPOSE."

You may not think of it as I do, but basically these FALSE and MISLEADING TITLES are like BAIT and SWITCH.

Why does JewishGen think that if they are going to turn over all their records to Ancestry.com that they should continue to run their own web site and plead constantly for more volunteers and more donations?

You can always use FAMILYSEARCH on the INTERNET FOR FREE.
