My young, Hungarian neighbor recently showed me on his cell phone a clip that was shared between a group of Hungarians in America (soon to become citizens) and people in Hungary as the Hungarian soccer team won. How amazing this is, to be able to do it, and how different today's immigrants have it from those who came in the 1800's and early 1900's. To be able to see each other's faces, to be part of a celebration so very long distance, by cell phone, and to keep that memory in the cell phone (for as long as the phone lasts, or for as long as it takes to move that clip to some other storage system), it's a visit, it's almost as if they are not half a world a way at all.
And I must say, be they here in California, or there in Hungary, the people looked alike, dressed in their soccer sportsmanship and fan finery.

ORLANDO TERRORISM - PEACEABLE MUSLIMS - GUN CONTROL
Once again terrorism has claimed the lives of many innocent people and a crazy man is behind it. So for the last few days I've been listening to the media, radio mostly, and reading around the subject in the news, especially the opinion pieces. I happened to be at a laundry with a television when President Barack Obama made his speech, cautioning us to not judge people of the Muslim religion with prejudice. A lot of people washing their clothes that morning were Hispanic. Immigration and gun control are very much part of the debate as we think of which person we will vote for President of the United States.
Will it be DONALD TRUMP, who, in my opinion, talks first, and apologizes later. Or HILARY CLINTON, who, in my opinion, we can expect political business as usual. BERNIE SANDERS, the candidate that speaks to my heart, will not likely be elected but I admire him for knowing that and continuing to promote his message, his values. He actually seems to be the only candidate that wants to admit we have a terrible problem here in the U.S. with poverty. (Currently I'm doing a short jaunt of volunteer work for a summer reading program that has almost no funding, in which paid employees are working miracles with great ideas and few resources.)
OK, PRE JUDGING is making ASSumptions that could be so very wrong... But I'm guilty of AFTAjudice, a word I made up, in which after so much bad experience with a type of person, I feel entitled to be PRE Judging.

We know they left Pakistan because of the conditions there and believe they are trying to become American citizens, but their co-coreligionists are making it more difficult for them. If DONALD TRUMP becomes president and actually manages to end immigration by people of that religion, I would be surprised. But I would not be surprised if every last one of them is going to be investigated by immigration and naturalization, if not the FBI. While I have no reason to believe that anyone is going to try to harm this family, were I them, I would no longer dress in their traditional clothing because there are more crazy people with military weapons out there who are not so fair minded.
Gun Control was once only about a hand gun or rifle, not these bullet spitting weapons of war.
Even if Moslem leaders speak out against the Orlando tragedy which has about 50 people dead at the scene and many fighting for their lives in the hospital, with a number of them too injured to resume normal lives even though they will survive, I say "This is NOT ENOUGH."
Today I walked my dog and met up with a neighbor who is completely redoing an old house in their family by hand so he can sell it.
As we talked about this tragedy we became morbidly funny. We talked about how everyone wants to die peaceable in old age and in their sleep in the middle of a wonderful dream but lately there are too many terrible and weird ways to die.
There is an epidemic of SHARK ATTACKS and ALLIGATORS HAULING OFF HOMELESS PEOPLE AND CHILDREN. Then there are the SINK HOLES opening up all around. One moment a man is sitting up reading in his bed, maybe even on his cell phone, the next he and his entire house are down in the ground and he is never to be found. Then there was this 23 year old tourist at YELLOWSTONE NATIONAL PARK who wanted to get up close and personal with a boiling pit of acid, fell in, and we can only hope he was dead before he could feel it.
THE SHARKS, ALLIGATORS, and SINK HOLES can be tied in to the change in climate and water shortages. THE YELLOWSTONE death, stupidity. Yet, we can all say that these people had a wrestle with nature, and died in strange ways.
But the people who made it to the gay, bisexual, transgender club in Orlando were out to DANCE. Some of them were not gay, bisexual, or transgender. Here in Southern California most of the DANCE CLUBS are identified the same way, but lots of straight people go to them to DANCE because there is nowhere else to DANCE.
Many of our parents grew up meeting people at DANCE PAVILLIONS or DISCOS. It was popular for straight people to spend Friday and Saturday nights out dancing and having a good time with live bands playing.
So now the reporters are out to determine if really this crazy man who killed and injured so many was "really gay," and that it was all about his personal issues with sexuality. Please!
I try to make the world a better place, if just a little.
Today, I walked into several banks, grocers, dollar stores, and a bakery asking for sponsorship, patronage, donations, even one small item, so that a couple hundred children from poor families who are determined to read their way through the summer can have a small reward for their efforts and can learn that there IS a REWARD for their effort.
So far we have been granted a large sheet cake from a CUBAN AMERICAN BAKERY.
A comic book and graphic novel store owned by an eccentric ALL AMERICAN will help us.
A local pharmacy owned by a MEXICAN-AMERICAN is thinking about it.
Well, this Magyar-American is done for the day.

Ildiko Szikossy, left, from the Hungarian Natural History Museum places the baby after the scan. They are part of the Mummies of the World exhibit at Bowers Museum and date from the 1800s. Researchers are hoping to discover more about how these two people lived and died from the CT scan. ...
“We never really know what we’re going to find. We’re kind of unwrapping a surprise package,” Sutherland said. Skripetz appeared to have died from tuberculosis, but Sutherland said the CT findings may be able to confirm that.
In a CT, or computerized tomography, scan, a computer combines multiple X-ray images into cross-section views to create 3D images of a body. Along with other tools such as written records and standard X-rays, mummy experts use CT scans to learn about diseases, injuries, causes of death and lifestyles without having to cut open or damage mummified bodies.
“It’s also a surprise for us, what we can find out,” said Ildiko Szikossy, director of anthropology at the Hungarian Natural History Museum and an expert on the Vác mummies. “Using these scientific techniques, we can press them to tell us their life, their history.”
The bodies of Skripetz and her baby, with their dried, papery skin and old-fashioned clothes, made for a stark contrast with the modern machine at Orange County Global Medical Center. Szikossy and Katy Hess, associate registrar at the Bowers Museum, together carefully lifted Skripetz’s body onto the CT scan table. As the body moved slowly through the scanner’s aperture, cross-section images began to appear on the computer screen in an adjoining viewing room, as Dr. Maurice Yu, director of radiology for the hospital; Michelle McLaughlin, CT supervisor for the hospital; and Sutherland looked on.
What’s already known is that Skripetz had a life touched with death. Her son Johannes died at less than 1 year old, and he was the last of her three children, none of whom lived to age 3. After her husband, Michael Orlovits, a miller, died at 41 years old, Skripetz was a widow at 36. She remarried, but died shortly after, at age 38, in 1807 or ’08.
“The child mortality was very high ...” Szikossy said. “We can tell that yes, it’s very sad.”

Some 70% of the bodies found had been completely or partially mummified.
The preservation of the tissue samples and abundant archival information about the individuals buried in the crypts attracted researchers from around the world, all of whom where interested in conducting their own morphological and genetic studies of the human remains.
"Colorectal cancer is among the most common health hazards of modern times," Dr. Rosin-Arbesfeld explains. "And it has a proven genetic background. In other words: Is the increase in the incidence of cancer the result of man's manipulation of nature alone?

In earlier posts I used the example of being an individual who is giving to some friends who have less than me and feeling the difference between the ones who find a way to give back and those who may say Thank You but don't.
I will tell you the equivalent of what is happening here is the United States of America, especially in Southern California where we have 50,000 homeless (or more) and there is, first of all, no affordable housing. Without a stable residence it is near impossible to hold a job. Yet we keep not addressing this problem of poverty among citizens and keep taking in new immigrants. Granted some of these new immigrants have wealth they bring with them or can prove that their educations and employment history make them valuable to us, because there are not enough Americans available with equal offerings. That means that there are many people from India coming in with advanced degrees in computer-related fields, scientists and doctors are always welcome.

I took the time to check ANCESTRY.COM for Hungarian records to see if some of the most common surnames in Hungary would come up... When they did not and I saw that Ancestry.com was crediting Jewishgen as the source, I realized what was happening here.
I tried HUNGARY ALL CITIZEN CENSUS 1869. WHAT AN TOTALLY MISLEADING TITLE! Source JewishGen?! It's clear that this TITLE SHOULD BE CHANGED TO "JEWS OUR JEWISH VOLUNTEERS DECIDED TO INDEX."
I also tried HUNGARY ASSORTED CENSUS RECORDS 1781-1850
AGAIN THE COMMON HUNGARIAN SURNAMES DID NOT COME UP.
I hate when a database is called "Assorted." THIS SHOULD BE RETITLED TO "JEWS ON THE CENSUS RECORDS THAT OUR JEWISH VOLUNTEERS DECIDED TO TRANSPOSE."
You may not think of it as I do, but basically these FALSE and MISLEADING TITLES are like BAIT and SWITCH.

MY DOG IS AN HONORARY HUNGARIAN!
My dog is not a Puli or any other "Hungarian Breed." Let's just say that a few days after I adopted her I took her to a vet and asked him, "Do you think she's a Maltese Poodle?" He said, "Could Be!" He also said that looking at her teeth she could be younger than her paperwork claimed.
Well, are Poodle's German and Maltese from Malta? Malta as a tiny Mediterranean Island near the boot of Italy?
"Do many people get the DNA test to prove their dog is a pure breed?" I asked.
He sort of chuckled. "Yes! And you would not believe how many dogs that are this big (he showed with his hands - a small Maltese-Poodle kind of dog) were this big (he showed with his hands the size of a wolf) just two generations ago!"
Well, I was looking for a POMERANIAN (you Hungarians may have heard of these dogs called "Poms," when I fell in love with my Maltese-Poodle, and I'm so happy with her. I love her. But once in a while when we're out walking someone will comment. "Well, that tail is no poodle." or "Her coloring is interesting...strange..."
Then I say, "Well I suspect Mama was the Maltese and Daddy was an Apricot Mini Poodle!"
So she got adopted by me, a Magyar-American.
Here is why I consider her an HONORARY HUNGARIAN.
1) She loves to taste test. I have to watch her constantly. With the eyes in the back of her head she has managed to outsmart me several times. We're walking down the street, I see nothing, and suddenly she has an ancient chicken leg with decayed meat covered in red ants in her mouth and I'm screaming "Spit it out!" (As if dogs understand long sentences.) In my opinion Hungarians are "foodies."
2) She loves to eat steamed cabbage and other veggies.
She also loves to eat steamed cauliflower, broccoli, peas, green beans, zucchini, sometimes she will eat parsley, and has been known to munch on grass, marigolds, fennel, and other herbs.
3) She doesn't much like dog beds. She loves a bed made of comforters, quilts, old blankets and towels which she like to turn around a few times in to make herself a nest. She will look for an elevated place that's like a pillow for her head.
4) She likes to listen to symphony orchestras, pianos, solo guitars, and yes violins, especially high pitched tones. How do I know? Well, because when I play these on the radio she will lounge, but with her eyes open.
5) She loves me!

"Do many people get the DNA test to prove their dog is a pure breed?" I asked.
He sort of chuckled. "Yes! And you would not believe how many dogs that are this big (he showed with his hands - a small Maltese-Poodle kind of dog) were this big (he showed with his hands the size of a wolf) just two generations ago!"
Well, I was looking for a POMERANIAN (you Hungarians may have heard of these dogs called "Poms," when I fell in love with my Maltese-Poodle, and I'm so happy with her. I love her. But once in a while when we're out walking someone will comment. "Well, that tail is no poodle." or "Her coloring is interesting...strange..."
Then I say, "Well I suspect Mama was the Maltese and Daddy was an Apricot Mini Poodle!"
So she got adopted by me, a Magyar-American.
Here is why I consider her an HONORARY HUNGARIAN.
1) She loves to taste test. I have to watch her constantly. With the eyes in the back of her head she has managed to outsmart me several times. We're walking down the street, I see nothing, and suddenly she has an ancient chicken leg with decayed meat covered in red ants in her mouth and I'm screaming "Spit it out!" (As if dogs understand long sentences.) In my opinion Hungarians are "foodies."
2) She loves to eat steamed cabbage and other veggies.
She also loves to eat steamed cauliflower, broccoli, peas, green beans, zucchini, sometimes she will eat parsley, and has been known to munch on grass, marigolds, fennel, and other herbs.
3) She doesn't much like dog beds. She loves a bed made of comforters, quilts, old blankets and towels which she like to turn around a few times in to make herself a nest. She will look for an elevated place that's like a pillow for her head.
4) She likes to listen to symphony orchestras, pianos, solo guitars, and yes violins, especially high pitched tones. How do I know? Well, because when I play these on the radio she will lounge, but with her eyes open.
5) She loves me!

THEY ALL PLAY VIOLINS HUNGARIAN / HUNGARIAN-AMERICAN STEREOTYPE

This stereotype is one of the least offensive, considering that so many of the inaccurate stereotypes of Hungarians and Hungarian-Americans can hurt.
Sure, the violin is a well appreciated and valued instrument.

But the "they all play violins" idea is actually more based in the reality that violin playing GYPSIES (ROM) were and are often hired to play for weddings and other important occasions.

It's tied into the wrong ideas that ALL GYPSIES ARE HUNGARIAN and that all HUNGARIANS have at least some gypsy in them.

SOME NEW ANCESTRY DATABASES MAY BE USEFUL TO HUNGARIAN and HUNGARIAN AMERICAN GENEOLOGY RESEARCHERS
HUNGARY CIVIL REGISTRATIONS 1895-1978 (Indexes)
ROMANIA VITAL RECORDS FOR SELECTED REGIONS 1595-1914 (In German)
These are two of the newer offerings by the popular ANCESTRY genealogy databases that may be helpful to some of you. I tried both of them and didn't find anything for my own particular family history project/genealogy. The trouble is that there is little to nothing for certain Hungarian Counties.
As a note, there are many JEWISH GEN contributions to the ANCESTRY DATABASES. Sadly, I was witness years ago to some of the data collection going on by volunteers working for JEWISHGEN at one of the LDS Family History Centers. They were scrolling microfilm and making judgments on who was or wasn't Jewish. One of these volunteers admitted to me that he had not realized that Christians/Catholics also used some Biblical given names (first names) and had submitted these people as Jewish. It goes to show you, that you MUST go to the original source material and decide for yourself.
Additionally, there may be USEFUL NOTATIONS that are not recorded by indexing projects, just ignored, or because there is no one to translate the notes properly.
You may want to also look for FUNERAL NOTICES, though these appeared where there were actual newspapers and may have only been for those who paid for the notice.
