REMEMBERING THE DAYS WHEN WE WANTED A TAN! A BLOGPOST MEMOIR!
Don't know about you, but I can remember the days when we WANTED a tan. We didn't want to burn because that looked and felt terrible and peeled - icky! - but who hadn't gotten a few burns in pursuit of a tan? Some of us only burned, some of us, like me, could slowly deepen in color until we were very dark - and we prized those tan lines!
Laying in the sun for hours felt GOOD even if it was on the concrete of a pool side and we thought we looked good. Better to show off those summer clothing colors like WHITE, LIME, PINK, better to show off the pink lipstick and nail polish .
It felt healthy and athletic to be tan. No one was worried about skin cancer. We used lotion to make us tan like Coppertone; the smell of it still says SUMMER to me!
We also used BABY OIL! (Talk about treating your skin like steak!)
Maybe we cherished tanning so much because we were indoors for 9 months of the year, in school, and in the snow belt.
Now I live in a place of ENDLESS SUMMER - Southern California and guess what?
I tan without trying to.
I tan without going to the beach!
I don't have "tan lines." It's as if my skin has adjusted to a different weather system!
Now I wonder, why is it that I tan but many of my family members burn? Is it my Hungarian DNA?

WORKING ON MY GENEALOGY RESEARCH : THE 1940 U.S. CENSUS WILL SOON BE AVAILABLE
My friends, I've been making an effort to work on my personal Hungarian genealogy research over the last few weeks. I've learned so much about Hungarians coming to American over many years time, and I absolutely love to research!
As some of you may know the 1940 US Census will be available to the public early April of this year, but because of the explosion in population (as compared with the 1930) it could be years before there is a searchable index.
That means that researchers are trying to determine an address (supposing they family didn't move since the 1940, using City Directories, or World War II draft or enlistment information, and then find the ED (Enumeration District) for the 1940 to get to the right part of the film as fast as possible. The film will be available from the National Archives digitalized (on the Internet).

ARE YOU A HUNGARIAN-AMERICAN OR HUNGARIAN WHO IS VEGETARIAN ?
VEGETARIAN? Recently going through a Hungarian cookbook that my aunt from Hungary gave me looking for a dish to add to my Thanksgiving meal. I noticed that the food was heavy on the meat, and the lard, and that while there were fruits, there was not the variety of vegetables we Americans have become accustomed to.
Peppers, yes. Cabbage, yes. Onions, yes. Carrots, yes.
But no Broccoli, or Cauliflower, or Squash.
I would like to know how you Hungarians are adapting to vegetarianism!

THE FOURTH OF JULY - MOST PATRIOTIC HOLIDAY IN THE UNITED STATES
I am proud to be an American, but like most 3rd or 4th generation Americans I still identify myself with the hyphen Hungarian-American. This is no worse than saying someone is African-American or "Scotts-Irish," or "Sicilian." I THINK WE WANT TO COMMUNICATE WHERE OUR PEOPLE CAME FROM to this nation of immigrants.
How many generations does it take to feel oneself to be "American" when to be American is usually to be a mutt? My "aunt" Hilda, here for fifty years and with excellent English but for the Accent used to say "and still a Greenhorn."
(I know of one person whose family seems to have remained "Irish" by only marrying other Irish for five generations!)
To communicate "I'm Hungarian," is to communicate that while there is pride in being an American, there is also no shame in being from this background!
