PECS CHRISTIAN CRYPTS IN ONE OF HUNGARY'S MOST BEAUTIFUL CITIES: WONDERFUL PLACES IN HUNGARY #17

Some excerpts: Pecs is very lovely town with beautiful cathedral, ramparts, pedestrian streets and traditional restaurants located in Southern Hungary near the Croaton border.

The complaint here is the glass coverings used to protect some of the tomb structures which is reflective.  I must say this is not the only place a tourist encounters glass; in museum displays in America too. These appraisals are valuable but most are pre-Covid so do check with the site to find out the latest information.

"The Romans also brought Christianity with them and the World Heritage Site of Pecs is about this - early Roman, Christian tombs, in a condition not found anywhere else in the world.  All the Roman tombs are centrally located around Pecs' beautiful Basilica of St. Peter with its four towers.  The tombs are small and narrow and Christian symbols decorate the graves,  There are biblical frescos, Adam and Eve, Daniel in the lions den and the Jug - The Holy Sacrament.

WHC - UNESCO : PECS CHRISTIAN ROMAN TOMBS

Excerpts: In the 4th century A.D. a remarkable series of decorated tombs were constructed in the cemetery in the town of Sopiana, in the Roman Province of Pannonia. .. The burial chambers, chapels and mausoleum excavated on the site of the Sopianae cemetery form a complex that bears witness to an ancient culture and civilization that had a lasting impact. It is the richest collection of structural types of sepulchral monuments in the northern and western Roman provinces reflecting a diversity of cultural sources.

A WORLD HERITAGE SITE : HOLLOKO HUNGARY : PALOC ETHNIC GROUP

 pronounced Ho-low-koo, meaning raven stone.
https://holloko.hu/  Updated web site link Dec 2023

HOLLOKO VILLAGE - IN HUNGARIAN AND ENGLISH

EXCERPT: Hollókö is the treasure of Palócland, and it presents the uniform Palóc style of architecture in an intact form. The most precious part of the village is the central area with 58 protected buildings, which preserves masterpieces of 17th century vernacular architecture.

The local ethnic Palóc people lived in the same houses for several generations. The houses were built on undivided, long and narrow plots, and this style of life remained unchanged for centuries because of the relatively isolated nature of North Hungary. The houses usually have three main parts (front room – porch – bedroom), and they are surrounded by porticos facing the street and the back yard. They were built on top of cellars, which compensate for differences in ground level and give the whole building an image of harmony. On the narrow plots pantries were built next to the houses, while the pigsties and sheds were further back in the yards. Stables for large animals were at the end of the village, in the so called Valley of Stables.

BUKK NATIONAL PARK : CAVING, ARCHEOLOGY SITES, PRESERVED VILLAGES

BUKK NATIONAL PARK SITE (In English, Hungarian, and Slovak)  link here!

Readers, on Christmas evening I had that feeling that I was coming down with something.  Sure enough I spent the next week with an allergy-driven head cold from hell, two of them in bed, finally giving in to big doses of pain killer and antihistimine.  When I took my dog out for a walk I felt winded if I went more than a block, so of course, with all the news about a flu epidemic, I grew concerned that I was weak.  My doctor said "come in NOW!"  So I took a half day off to go in without an appointment and wait for a moment when I could take the flu shot.  I am recovering fully. It's so cold in Southern California that the leaves changed color and fell off the trees!

What does this have to do with BUKK NATIONAL PARK?  Well, I was researching to post about the park when I got sick. So, here is a dramatic video of winter at the park, and the link to the site!
