HUNGARIAN and HUNGARIAN-AMERICAN STEREOTYPE : PALINKA IS OUR REMEDY, a CURE FOR EVERYTHING

I enjoy investigating and commenting on Hungarian and Hungarian-American stereotypes so much I kind of hate spoiling this one with a definitive article (below) about drinking Palinka. But here's the thing, this is a stereotype of the Hungarians very much more than the Hungarian-Americans because there just isn't much Palinka to buy here. I don't think I've ever had a taste of the good stuff that legend has it will cure just about anything - even the hangover you got from drinking it too innocently, as it pickles your liver very very slowly, until suddenly you're so drunk everyone and everything in life is sweet. I'm not much of a drinker and far too self controlled to have more than a sip so how could I be a judge of it?

Just try it. Go into a good hotel, the kind of place that boasts a well stocked bar, and ask for Palinka and you'll find out that it is rare indeed in America.

This article suggest it be used as the basis for a cocktail.  You know, one jigger's worth.

Excerpt: Before you set out to make 70 degrees plus pálinka, you must know that it brings more pain than pleasure to your taste buds and throat. You will no longer be able to taste the fruit, and it will be so strong that your organs will be thrown off balance, so you should rather not try distilling or drinking such pálinka.

PANDEMICS? THIS LIST IS ENLIGHTENING!

DAILY NEWS HUNGARY - TEN DEADLIEST PANDEMICS

Black Death, plague doctor, Europe, disease, pandemic

The Black Death is still the worst pandemic to ever hit Europe but I had no idea there were other population devastating plagues before it.

All of us alive today have been born to a heritage of people who didn't die from these pandemics that killed off millions without first reproducing.  Sometimes I do wonder if this is nature, or the earth as a living being, shucks off humans when there are just too many people.  Sorry!  I'm not ready to die.  Not ready to go!  I don't want to kill anyone with my presence and I'm so tired of wearing masks and being so isolated.  But sometimes I do wonder.  Certainly climate change - unexpected weather patterns - and crop failures - starvation and malnutrition - make a person more susceptible to any illness.

EXCERPT: Europe needed 150 years to recover from losing 20 million people.  The Black Death entered Hungary around 1349.

A popular image of the plague was this!  Hey, have we started making masks that look like birds beak? Or is this a version of "The Grim Reaper"?

I now realize that my genealogy, one line that has the potential to go back to the 1400's, may be effected by deaths from Plague.  I already know people in my lines died of smallpox, of TB, of child-birth, of long illness, and in mysterious ways. I have seen the documents where a priest writes in cholera - plague.  But maybe someday if I endure and am lucky I will find the provable link to that potential ancestor who lived in the 1400's.  Maybe I will find that some of my ancient relatives died of Bubonic Plague.

VACRATOT BOTANICAL GARDEN - QUITE POSSIBLY THE MOST BEAUTIFUL GARDEN IN HUNGARY

DAILY NEWS HUNGARY - Vácrátót Botanical Garden - PHOTOS

This National Botanical Garden is possibly the most beautiful in all of Hungary. 180+ years of development and a refurbishing in 1952, with hundreds of native plants as well as those that grow in the Rocky Mountains of the United States....and harsh climate plants from the Russian steppes, Central-Asian mountains, and other places that those nomadic tribes that became the Hungarians once traveled through or lived. It's been open to the public since 1961. It's in Pest County, and in the town there is also a historic church built in the 1700's.

SMOKE SMOKE SMOKE THAT CIGARETTE: HUNGARIAN STEREOTYPES and THE CURRENT RULES ABOUT SMOKING

DAILY NEWS HUNGARY by Gergely Lajtai-Szabo  -  the rules and regulations on buying tobacco, selling tobacco, advertising tobacco products, and so on prove that Hungary has gone anti-smoking!

EXCERPT: Forbidden areas: A couple of years ago, Hungary joined those countries that have made the regulations concerning smoking stricter, so smoking is forbidden in public institutions and catering units.  It means that schools, state offices and other state institutions (like theaters) are off limits for smoking...

Perhaps instead of the stereotype of Hungarians (especially  if they are women spies) smoking everywhere they go - cigarettes - pipes - cigars - we must now consider that Hungarians who smoke are probably only doing so in their private homes or apartments?!
